final North Halton riding allcandidates debate at Milton High School last Thursday The meeting the last debate before tomorrows provincial elec tion was attended by all six can didates including Progressive Con servative candidate Dave Whiting New Democrat candidate Noel Family Coalition Party candidate Giuseppe Gori Green Party candidate Patricia Kam- merer and Libertarian John Shad- bolt Mr told an audience of about 200 that in Ontario 32000 babies are never born because they are unwanted He said the most Liberal legislation allows mothers toV terminate their pregnancy on a whim Anyone who is willing to forget these babies will do anything to you without scruples he said Women may have a choice but the baby has no choice Mr said Prom the moment of concep tion the baby is a human being with its own chromosomes and he explained to the audience The choice is made in respect to killing another human being he added Mr of the NDP was equally as blunt when he said the FCP wants to keep women in the 18th century barefoot pregnant and in the kitchen He said another person shouldnt impose his morality on others Mr said the defends a womans democratic right to choice Liberal encumbant Mr Elliot said its easy for people to say theyre against abortion However he said during his career as an educator many young girls have approached him for adivce His ad vice was always to see the pregnancy through But if the girls didnt want to take his advice he said he didnt want to see a repeat of the small town abortion opera tions he saw when he was growing up Our responsibility is to see this procedure is correctly carried out Mr Elliot said Societys going down the drain if you think killing another human being can be called a medical pro cedure argued Mr Gori He said money should go toward saving lives and not getting rid of them Mrs Kammerer told the au dience her party is prochoice because society cant afford to add more people to a world plagued by hunger and unhappiness If we have all these children we will have less money Who will support these children she asked the au dience only to receive retorts such as Why dont we kill the old people too Waiting for the au dience to settle Ms Kammerer said abortion is not the most satisfactory way to deal with unplanned pregnancies but it is a necessary alternative Ms Kammerer said the Green Party supports sex education and family clinics Mr Gori wants to see condoms taken out of the schools because he believes they are a symbol of per mission for young people to for nicate In a discussion about education funding Mr told the audience school programs like sex education must be cut to em phasize fundamental and classical skills Mr Shadbolt said women should be able to do what they want with their bodies but he also expressed concern that future operations would not be able to care for an ag ing society There are no easy answers he admitted A prochoice movement has only led to a number of young ladies having as many as three abortions argued Mr Whiting Theyre using abortion as a method of birth con trol he told the audience Abortion should be a last resort for medical reasons and only in a hospital set ting Mr Whiting added He con tinued to say he had no respect for Health Minister Elinor Caplan who has run a world class system into the ground Discussing the health system he said even nurses are sponsoring advertisements against the Liberal government Although an audience member asked the candidates to reconsider their positions on abortion no one obliged He also asked the can didates to justify why funding Is available for abortion clinics and not for heart surgery teams Mr Elliot took offense to the question and told the man you know you cant get a straight answer phrasing the question that way No one is going to change their original position he said Mr Elliot argued the number of hospitals equipped with heart surgery teams has increased from four to 11
