subsidized child care Charles Beer Ontario s Minister of Community and Social Services announced Tuesday that Halton Department of Social Services would receive funds for child care The announcement was made a press release Aug 28 Halton Region Department of Social Services applied for addi subsidized child care spaces in the 1990 budget said Region Social Services Commis sioner Bonnie Ewart She said 75 subsidized child care spaces will open up throughout the region in licensed and pnvate child care centres The ministry funds per cent of the cost for each child The ministry s funding will also provide the salary for an addi tional staff member to assist in the implementation of the spaces Mr Beer stated in the release There are approximately 200 children in and licensed day care centres receiving sub sidies said Ms Ewart The 75 spaces will help the problem but there are still 400 to people still on the waiting list she said If someone heard about this and phoned us today they get a space she said The subsidized spaces will be introduced where needs are greatest Applicants are pnonzed cording to the urgency of a ly s situation explained Ms Ewart They become instant con siderations if they are a family at financial risk she said The lota of an applicant also deter mines whether a subsidized space can be opened up Ms Ewart said adding that it s a matchmaking sidized child care spaces comes just a week after Haiton Region participated a meeting on the impact of increasing social service demands the greater Toronto area regions The region is cur rently compiling
