election as NDP candidate Noel Duignan added the local riding to the New Democratic Par tys provincial majority Mr Elliot was somewhat cir cumspect in explaining his defeat when he stated There are two ways of being defeated One is dur ing the nomination process and the other is during an election when the electorate wants a change We got turfed out Mr Elliot did not accept per sona blame for his loss of the North riding seat express ing the opinion that defeated Liberal party leader David Peter son was the main of his demise Concerning his future Mr Elliot stated simply Im going to enjoy retirement Im going to close up the riding offices clean up my af fairs and enjoy time with my wife Anne A visibly shaken and disap pointed Dave Whiting the Pro gressive Conservative Party can didate who finished third behind Mr and Mr Elliot said We thought we would finish either first or third unfortunately it was third Why third because that is the way the electorate was thinking and Im disappointed In regards the NDP provincial majority victory Mr Whiting said It represents a protest vote and the province is going to pay An adamant Mr Whiting stated however Im going to run again Any new party faces nothing but uphill battles said Gori North Halton Family Coalition Party candidate Mr Gori said radio and televi sion stations like the who he said operates on taxpayers money didnt afford the coverage to relay information to the public Many people believe what they see on TV he said ad ding that the public wont perceive the FCP as an established party until it receives wider media coverage Saying that much of the ground work has been laid to inform the public about the battle will not be as tough next election said Mr Gori He believes the party has reached everyone at least once Next time we won t have to start from scratch Patricia Kammerer Green Par ty candidate who finished fifth was reached at Green Party pro headquarters in Toronto on election night Ms Kammerer seemed non plussed about her fifth place finish Im quite pleased with the number of votes I received she said I really had little time for canvassing but I feel our party got the environmental message across enjoyed the campaign and am very pleased that the NDP can didate will represent our riding When asked if she would seek political office in the future Ms Kammerer answered in the af firmative stating If given the op- I would run again Last place finisher Libertarian Party candidate John Shadbolt was philosophical about his defeat I started late in the race he said The people wanted a change and locally the NDP candidate was the most logical choice Mr Shadbolt also attributed the same popular disaffection as con tributing to the NDP victory The people were protesting against the Liberal Party and since they had already kicked out the Progressive Conservatives several years ago they felt they had to give the NDPs a chance Mr is not soured by his political experience and is eager to toss his hat into the ring again If given a chance he said I would run for office again But with better organization Unofficial results on election night showed Mr with 8411 votes Mr Elliot with votes Progressive Conservative candidate Dave Whiting with 7296 votes Family Coalition Party can didate Giuseppe Gori with 2458 votes Green Party candidate Patricia
