TiqEsAUoirriwi Quick thinking and quick fingers solve a problem How many of you reading this column at this very moment can think of some stupid silly mistake you made the very first day on a brand new job Did you just want to die with embarrassment because your faux pas was committed in front of someone really important It happened to a friend of mine in front of a judge Not any judge but the Senior Judge of The Judicial District of Halton Im lucky I am free to telT you this story He could have sent me and my friend to the gallows if he hadnt been such a gentleman about the whole thing Bill Henry was a court con stable at the courthouse and it was his first day on the job blue blazer grey trousers and all You had to like Bill He was short a little thin on top with a fat Stories by W Steamer great sense of humor He remind you of Pecks bad boy He was a bit of an imp A veteran At the end of his first day on the job he was given the keys to the Senior Judges car and told to slip down and start it up so it would be in ice free warm and cozy by the time His Honor came down from his office to go home This was a little courtesy ex ended by his courtroom staff on cold wintry days end Mr Henry as we called him was asked to do this little job and seemed pleased that on his first day he was in a position to press the judge with his will ingness to be of service As the Senior Judge came down from his chambers Mr Henry after starting the car was to watch closely and when the judge was seen at the heavy doors he was to leap out help him with his brief cases and make sure he got the old boy behind the wheel and the cases in the car Well would you believe it in his haste to get out of the judges cozy car he didnt realize he had left the door lock down and sure enough when he shut the door the keys were locked inside and the motor was running Thirty days at least I thought to myself as I ran to offer my help It seemed everyone left in the building knew in seconds All sorts of advice was being offered but no concrete action Naturally poor Mr Henry ex pected to be led away in chains perhaps even executed for his misdemeanour The judge was shocked I was shocked and poor Mr Henry was In trouble Who do you think saved the day There had been two or three trials that day and in one trial the accused was in custody In my day the accused were taken out of the building through the public across the parking lot to a cruiser and zipped back to the slammer While we stood in the cold blow ing on our fingers stamping our feet trying to unlock the car an accused was brought out in hand cuffs Staring him right in the eye was a job he was expert at unlocking car doors without the owners permission Continued on Pg Halton business leaders invited to a special seminar business familiar orange and black boxes that have become so much of a Canadian tradition to raise money for the worlds less fortunate children And while small change does not carry much weight in developed countries like Canada it goes a long way as far as is concerned Take for instance the fact that a mere cents will provide a package of oral rehydration salts that can save a child from succumbing to severe dehydration a mere 30 will buy enough Vitamin A to pro tect 30 toddlers against nutritionally casued blindness for l years and 5 will provide enough multiple vaccine to a child against six major childhood diseases The money raised will help pro vide clean water villages in Africa immunize children in countries like India and Pakistan help build schools in Bolivia and China train social and health care workers in com munities in Haiti and Jamaica provide valuable information to mothers in Bangladesh and Peru and provide emergency relief during internal strife and warfare as in the cases of Sudan Romania Jordan and Namibia or natural disasters as in Ethiopia Iran and the Philhpmes In a year that has witnessed the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and an historic World Summit for Children the support of dians will have an even greater impact So the next tune you see UNICEF boxes remember it isnt just a part of a childs Hallo ween costume its an to
