women enlisted in the armed forces of these gave their lives in the cause of peace and freedom The quality of Canada contribu tion was naturally smaller than that of her major allies Great Britain and the United States but their achievements had been of the highest order In the words of the official historian of the Canadian Army Canada record might com mand respect even by the dards of the great powers Not just the Canadian Army emerged with a proud record The Royal Canadian Air Force had a substantial share the air offensive against the enemy forces and our British Com Air Training Plan helped tram large numbers of airmen from the other Com monwealth Nations The Royal Canadian Navy pro tected allied convoys from enemy submarines in the Atlantic Ocean and ultimately was entrusted to do the bulk of the convoy work Canada economic and finan cial contribution was not only im but generous New in were created and met the demand for war supplies from munitions to vehicles aircraft and ships Our liason role between Great and the United States and in the field of diplomacy was of great importance For a country of only 11 million people our contributions to the defeat of the Axis powers were remarkable and was such to win the respect of other nations Canada as a nation matured through the ordeal of war and we have assumed the respon of a member of the world community Throughout the world the Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains graves and memorials to commemorate members of the Commonwealth Forces who died during the First and Second World Wars A total of
