Page 10 THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday November 1990 onoring fallen comrades When I bought my rosy red pop py on a beautiful Indian summer morning a mUennium of wartime memories tumbled through my head As I pinned Colonel John immortal symbolic flower of Flanders to my blue a serge lapel I couldn help but give my distinctive comrade a gentle paternal pat of respect How could 1 live here a lifetime and not immediately think of those familiar boyish names a in bronze on the cenotaph in Memorial Park and I think of buddies whose names I m sure are inscribed on cenotaphs in Vulcan The Pas North Bay Kirkland Lake Montreal a Sudbury to name a few The honor roll is read with dignity on November while bereaved families friends com munities Canada and comrades stand in grateful silence together I pass the park nearly every f day on my walk downtown and sometimes I stop occasionally to spend a moment or two with my old pals whose names will once again be called on Sunday A comrade will call handsome young dark haired Willie blonde John Bowman Reg Blair George Latimer Claude Dillon Eddy Doyle Hubert Tost the Wylie bovs till every name has been read There will be no audible reply of here here here but they t will answer just the same as always have since that da all A Once or twice while I have lingered in the park to rest and ft catch breath I have given the artistiiall ornamented bronze JV plaque a gentle pi is my fingers n fall the inscribed names In a silent moment or two I reflect on how town has changed since last siw it as voung airmen bailors soldiers a These ire moments w hen J want to tell how things changed To hear them laugh with outrageous glee when m Wave got I I Stones by Steamer Emmerson memones reveal Chapel Street School was demolished Gone like the wind To some it was their on school What would they think if I told them their old hometown isn t named Georgetown anymore but Halton Hills Would they say why Steamer why I wonder the same If I told them the old Theatre once the centre of small town Sunday band concerts and weeknight movies was a theatre no more but replaced by television VCR s would they listen to me in disbelief How could they imagine man landed on the moon and returned Could they world of instant communications through computers satellites microchips and fibre optics Could they believe from here to was no longer scenes of farmers haying plowing Hols tern cows grazing on farms they knew as the Cleaves Sinclairs Skanes Hughes and No longer do kids hike to the GJen or Stewarltown or Norval to play on the Credit or Milage ponds Do think would be prised if I told them we had added another arena and that both now hid artificial ice In a moment ho could fell them what hid missed and all of us because of their sacrifice Would I cause their resentment if 1 told them what it was like for guv like me to a ride through the beautiful Caiedon Hills and the Hockley Valley when the autumn leaves are at their finest I sure they would J understand the thrill of a grand father being taken by his grand A daughter to her kindergarten ft class as her show and tell project Your sacrifice has provided us with many treasured moments of J
