Mfi December Nightmare situation Ontarios recently elected New Democratic Party government is rapidly gaining the reputation of being long on promises and paperwork and sadly lacking in either concrete proposals or action A Georgetown couple in their appear to be the latest victims of governmental paper shuffling The elderly couple live in the Royal Ascot Apartments complex on Hall Road in Georgetown and are virtual prisoners because elevator service to the complex has been shut off As the Halton Hills Herald went to press the elderly couple had been trapped in their apartment for five days a situation that would seem laughable if not for the stress the senior citizens are obviously undergoing The problem apparently centres around the Toronto- based elevator company Northern Elevator which claims it is owed money for the installation of the apart ment complexs elevators That may be However the fact remains it is the bureaucratic process itself which is really to blame The Town of Halton Hills is powerless to act on the matter because the operation of elevators falls under the jurisdiction of the provinces Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations An agitated Town Mayor Miller advised Mon day nights General Committee meeting of the situation concerning the elderly couple and their plight and frustration with the system was obvious in his remarks Mayor Miller told councillors he had contacted several agencies concerning the situation but to no avail My requests have been ignored so far said Mayor Miller Mayor Miller also pointed out I called the local MPP Noel Duignan twice today Monday but no one called back Somebody has to have authority in this country We the town dont have it and nobody seems to give a damn concluded the Mayor Mr Duignan has been absent from a number of func tions within the North Halton riding although he has sent representatives and this seems to be how the intends on governing Announcements and press releases usually from the office of Premier Bob Rae are constantly being spewed out from Queens Park and for the most part they deal in generalities rather than specifics Are we to have a faceless government in Ontario Are MPPs like Mr being forced to take shelter in the shadow of Mr and foresake their own constituents If this is the strategy the party might win a bat tle or two but it will certainly lose the war come their job Editors note The following letter was released to the Hills Herald for publication Mr Peter Chairman Region of Halton A very realistic editorial on vandalism in our communities appeared in the Hills Herald of Dec for which that newspaper should be com plimented The cowardly destruction m the local food bank located in Baptist Church serves as an indicator of the level that this type of behavior has reach ed As with most other issues unless something is done to curb this trend it will continue and get worse Can anyone imagine what this vandalism would be Tike if this police force were not here In your position as Regional Chairman can you feel satisfied that our Regional police have- The laws in place that they can do their job That they are supplied with adequate equipment and man power needed to do that job That they have the clear backing of our elected represen tatives to clearly state that these acts of vandalism have now gone too far Thank you Lew Ward Hills Mr Noel Duignan Halton Nortr Objectivity not sensationalism for CBC Say goodbye Garth Dear Sir Im still irrelevant and ir reverent True political power rests in the hands of so few peo ple and The job of MPs now is just to act as ombudsmen for the government our MP Garth Turner Is quoted as saying 1 this is true- then I respectfully suggest that he now resign his seat so that a byeelection can be called I am confident that this will result in the replacement of an MP who represents a oneman dictatorship with an MP who represents a party committed to reform and the democratization of our parliamentary system so that never again can Canada be ruled by a government represen ting only per cent of the population Before he resigns though I hope that Mr Turner will reply to my last two open letters to him questioning waste by his govern ment Yours truly R KathwaroontMr Burlington Dear Editor While CBC TV in Calgary was about to be shut down as part of the Corporations cost reducing measures Susan Cardinal in Calgary was preparing Centre Point a radio introduced by Mary Lou during the CBC Radio show Sunday Morn ing on Dec The report was advertised dur ing the first hour of Sunday Morn ing with statements as the traditional family is dying and the traditional family today is the exception The listeners were told during the program that families such as Vicky and Chen two lesbian lovers HAVE BECOME THE NORM appreciate the effort CBC is doing in tackling touchy subjects to challenge the listeners but there is a difference between this and pure misinformation Susan Cardinal would lead us to that because she found 13 lesbian couples in Calgary now this is the norm for a family I would like to refrain from moral arguments although I would have many and only complain about the lack of objectivity of CBC The Centre Point report talked about the problems of this couple and their fears of narrow- mind ed religious sects red necks and bigots The defenders of the traditional family were ver bally assaulted while the challengers are presented as progressive open- thinking and righteous The report was reinforced by an interview with sociology pro fessor John Conway of the University of who cor rectly stated that when the fami ly is in crisis society is in crisis but immediately proceeded to say that the traditional family is just about gone and that in the next century it will be a curiosi ty In addition he stated that the traditional family depends on the oppression of women in the home and implied that sonhood dignity and equality are not possible in a traditional fami ly Only common sense is need ed to see the falsity of such arguments The sociology professor never suggested that if the family is in crisis it may also be due to the very factors and behavioral changes that supposedly are transforming the family into the new model pornography and violence in the media homosex uality promiscuity easy divorce both parents leaving the chjldren to go to work etc If airplanes were suddenly to start falling from the sky in large numbers he would conclude that travelling by air is not viable any more instead of investigating the causes for the accidents The Centre Point report presented us with a suggestion of possible families of the future formed by lesbian couples mak ing and raising babies in turn and supporting each other in turn while the men will be free and independent their only duty being to donate sperm for the families If this were the preferred model of society I would argue that the feminist movement has been a complete fiasco If the has to continje to be financed by taxpayers objectivi ty not sensationalism must be it Yours truly Giuseppe Gon Executive Vice President Family Coalition Party of Ontario
