around one of the trees on the Civic Centre grounds in recognition of the local residents and other Canadians engaged in the Persian Gulf con flict Its a way of showing the communitys support to the arm forces and their families and the hope that all return safely said Environmentalist protests Local environmentalist Rita Landry urged Town council Monday not to support an ap plication by Georgetowns Transfer Limited to ex tend the area in the province from which the company can ac- Ms Landry argued an exten sion of the transfer companys area to include all of Ontario would discourage communities from developing recycling reduction and reuse programs As well more garbage coming to Halton Hills could encourage the development of waste disposal sites in the area she said Leferink currently serves about people Council directed Town staff to carry out a study on Lefuinks proposal and as part of it to con sider comments made by Ms Landry The Town is only acting as a commenting Council of the Water quality concerns raised at C VC A meeting Those Hilts residents and others living along the Credit River fear the river could become as polluted as the Metro Toronto area Don and Humber rivers This was the chief concern peo ple raised during a Credit Valley Conservation Authority spon sored public meeting in last week said authority Manager of Water Resources Chris Worte The authority is currently con ducting a water quality study of the river which runs from Orangeville through Halton Hills to Port Credit Mr explained that the meeting the public ex pressed some concern the water quality had become poorer over the past few years But most of then- concern focused on development along the river If development goes un checked along the river the water quality could end up like the Humber or Don both of which are in urban settings he said Those who attended the meeting learned concern over water quality centres around sediment and batenum levels and nutrient content Mr said downwards from Georgetown sediment dirt build up on the river bed caused mainly by construction is one problem that must be cor reeled Along the same area of the river nutrient levels are too high resulting in an dance of algae growth and the development of high levels of tox lcity in the river said Mr There also appears to be a pro blem of high bacterial level counts especially during the summer months said Mr Its too early in the study it was started in November to offer an alternative on how the river water quality can be protected Mr Worte said there would be another public meeting in April to provide people with the chance to offer their ideas about protective water quality solutions he said The date and location has yet to beset Meanwhile the CVCA will carry out its own surveys to find out the best way to protect the nver said Mr Youth terrorized Halton Regional Police report an 11 yearold Georgetown boy was held in a full nelson by a juvenile while another youth pointed a pellet gun at his head and fired the unloaded weapon six times The incident occurred on Sun day police say when the victim was approached by three youths all around 13 to 14 years of age behind Memorial Arena on Mill Street Police report the victim was held by one male suspect in the wrestling grip while another female suspect pointed the pellet gun at the victims shoulder and then
