submit ted By BRUCE MeCLURE Herald Special The Region Federation of Agriculture was formed In years ago This country had just come through the hungry 30s and found itself with a war on its bands and many people look ing for food Canada not only supplied food but also her farm sons Prices were going up and the mechanization on farms was just beginning It was a period when many farm groups were forming to help the farmer produce all he could to help win the war Since its inception in 1941 the Federation has endeavoured to coordinate the of various agricultural organiza tions in Halton and to serve the farmers by providing a unified voice to all levels of government In Canada and especially Ontario on agricultural issues and con cerns Over the years HFA has been responsible for a number of achievements In association with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture many of the com modity groups were organized to deal with the production and marketing of agricultural pro ducts The Federation was one of the first groups to recognize the need for conserving and preserving good agricultural land also for the recreational needs of the rural residents In 1947 the Federation of Agriculture pur chased 35 acres of land in Lowville and developed the Community Centre which is now Park The Federation in the became actively involved in many social events such as garden parties school field days horseshoe pitching church ser vices and music festivals to pro mote goodwill among the fanners in Halton In the last two decades the Federation has changed to meet the needs of the fanning com munity The Federation is now responsible for the coordination of almost all funding from the Regional government to local agricultural groups and organizations It is also a resource for the farm community to use on problems and concerns The Federation of Agriculture with Ontario Federation of Agriculture has fought hard to make the concerns of the farm community known to all govern ments In the last 10 years the Federa tion has been visible in an at tempt to preserve agricultural land to develop the Agricultural Code of Practice to make recom on Hydro Corridors and to work on planning assess ment
