psychoticsuspense thrillers ever made Its much anticipated debut didnt have a knockout opening weekend perhaps because this is not the type of movie that everyone will want to see In fact its the type of movie that most people due to its graphic detail wont want to see Jodie Foster the Accused plays an FBI agent trainee who is recruited by a senior level operative played expertly by Scott Glean for a temporary assignment The assignment is to interview a man named Han tubal Lecter Lecter was once a top psychiatrist in his field renown ed for his work but who was later sent to a mental institution for a of gruesome murders the nature of the murders so terrify that he has been nicknamed Hannibal the Cannibal Fosters character Clarice Starling is sent to see in the hopes of gaining any Hon she can from him on a senes of new murders to Buffalo Bill a psychotic killer who preys on young women for warped reasons of his own Standing outside Lecter s carefully guarded cell Hannibal may be insane but it seems he is also a at a great many things such as escaping she tnes to understand the psyche- profile of one madman with the help of another Unfortunately not only does Lecter couch his answers in dies but he wont part with in formation unless Starling answers some personal questions about herself Something she has been warned not to do in the presence of Anthony Hopkins performance as yet psychotic mad man is nothing short of superlative Director Demmes use of closeups and special lighting does even more to enhance this visual image of or Hopkins it is his eyes that say it all Sure Ill help you for a pnce Like a new cell with a window But if you turn your back on me just once Since Lecter has been in prison for eight years by the beginning of this movie and we not been witness to Lecter s crimes Demme goes that extra step to show the audience just what does happen when the backs are turn ed for a second or two Suffice to say those who underestimate in the slightest dont get a second chance The fact that Lecter is behind bars is only a minor complication Jodie Foster is good as the ufK FBI agent Michelle Pfieffer was originally con sidered for the role her classes temporarily on hold while she conducts her interviews with Lecter Starling isnt naive she rates the top quarter of her class She knows her stuff Even so Lecter frightens her at first This emotion is later displaced by intrigue The acting is so well done in this movie that an intense scene between her and Lecter towards the end of the movie in which three armed policemen are pre sent is almost enough to drive the viewer off the edge of his seat The other actor worth mention ing is Scott Glenn as Agent Jack Crawford the man in charge of the Buffalo Bill murder case and the one who recruited Start ing for tho assignment He Is everything you expect of an FBI agent without the reflec tive sunglasses sharpwitted alert always on the ball sporting a threepiece suit and crewcut Crawford is always testing Start ing along the way making sure she is really FBI material He is not disappointed But one must remember that The Silence of the Lambs Is still a thriller flick It answers no ques tions it doesnt explain why a professional psychiatrist like ends up psychopath nor does it go deep enough into Clances past involving the silencing of the lambs However the ending leaves you terrified Terrified that people like Hannibal Lecter are out there Terrified that such people even exist outside the realm of Hollywood Terrified that they look as normal as you and me people with their own mental timebombs ticking down to destruction Maybe one should just be thankful that The Silence of the Lambs is just a movie Victor Danchenko visits Brampton Victor Danchenko the great
