Religion THE HERALD March Page 17 Jews for Jesus extend special invitation Christ In Passover The purpose of the Christ in the Passover presentation is to enhance the Christian understan ding of the New Testament by showing a Jewish background for the communion celebration An cient and modern Jewish customs are described with an emphasis on the aspect of the redemption accomplished by Christ at Calvary A table is set with the tradi tional Jewish Passover items in cluding symbolic foods which are explained but not eaten Members of the Jews for Jesus staff have given this demonstra tion in thousands of churches It was originally written in by Moishe Rosen the founder and leader of Jews for Jesus It was Columnist challenged Dear Sir I wish to comment on an article in the Herald dated February 20 1991 entitled Mainstream Christian clergy morally bankrupt The writer of the arti cle Derek Nelson referred to the Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada Archbishop Michael Peers as a morally bankrupt church leader This accusation was directed at Archbishop Peers as a result of Nelsons disagree ment with the Archbishops on the Gulf war In a letter sent to all Anglican congrega lions in Canada dated January 17 Archbishop Peers stated that the actions of Saddam Hus sein were unacceptable and con temptible The Archbishop however rejected war in the Gulf as it did not meet the test of morality In a violent age such as the one in which we live it is imperative that church leaders question the continued use of violence to settle family disputes political and religious conflicts Furthermore Canada Is a democratic country Alt citizens including religious leaders are entitled to express their opinions One writer in the United States Soelle has stated in her book The Win dow of Vulnerability A Political Spirtuality that anyone who questions military action is demonized by the religious Right and called an aide to the communists I would ask therefore Is the calling of the Primate morally bankrupt a call for silencing dissent Secondly the Anglican Church of Canada has over forty clergy who are permanent chaplains to Canadas forces The Anglican Bishop Ordinary to our forces is the Rev Clarke Members of the forces attend the councils of the church and par ticipate in the debates on issues relating to defence war and peace These debates such as the appropriateness of military flights over the Innu people in Labrador are an indication of moral responsibility within the church community In conclusion may I ad that we have five families in our con gregation who have family members in the forces We are grateful that the war is over In our public worship during the war we prayed for the of our forces the Prime Minister and for all innocent civilians Yours truly Thomas MS Kingston Rector St Georges Anglican Church Georgetown SAME DAY TAX RETURNS St Georgetown abstracted from the writings of the former rabbi- Leopold Conn who came to faith in Christ in 1894 and died in 1936 Rosen contends that some of the most important elements of Christian doctrine such as the Trinity and salvation through a personal relationship with the Messiah are implied in the Seder Passover feast as observed by Orthodox Jews even today Tbe Christ in the Passover demonstration is an abbreviated form of the Seder Ordinarily the celebration of the feast in Jewish World Day of Prayer left was the guest speaker SI Andrews United Church on Friday night which was also the World Day of Prayer Also pictured is church member Florence Baker who stood with Milton behind some religious displays in the church Herald photo THE CORPORATION OF THE Town of Hills I Ho ton Hills Drive PO Bon HILLS Ontario L7G 5G2 8732600 NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING WARD destruction of the Temple com ments Moishe Rosen but at same time we believe all the Temple sacrifices pointed to Jesus and the sacrifice he made We eat lamb as an affirmation of Gods provi sion for
