Bantam tournament features ties for locals By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Edltor The 31st annual Bantam tour nament hasnt yet made losers of any players who live in the im mediate area though it hasnt Even though Acton Sabres were eliminated from the Mid- Ontario Jr C playoffs on Friday at home losing coach Ken Steen said he is convinced this year has been largely successful Steen pointed out that Sabres recent history has been rife with dismal records and early exits from post-season- play when the team managed to scrape into the playoffs This year has been a lot dif ferent We set a goat of playing over 500 hockey winning over 20 games and getting to the playoff finals we did all that said Steen adding that the team had never before gotten to the finals in their history The coach swept his team 40 but insisted at least two games could have gone the other way He said the result then may have been different but again acknowledged Orangeville abilities They are the defending cham pions and went all the way Oast year to take the provincial title We can take consolation in know ing we would have advanced if they had been another divl- Steen said another factor which hurt his teams were Jim English Tim McDonald and Keith Kerfoot Jason Lucas played half of one period but missed the rest of the match The first period was a tight checking affair which saw Orangeville open the scoring at 154 Sabres stayed close getting the equalizer less than a minute later when Paul Larsen scored assisted by John Van Dam and Mark Broomersma Crushers ended the period leading but Sabres Rich Bond knotted it up three minutes into the middle frame set up by Phil and Jason Sawyer As they did in Tuesdays game penalties wound up hurting Ac ton With two men in the penalty box Crushers got the winning goal on the following up with another while the second infraction was still being served Orangeville netted two more markers in the period adding three more in the third for the victory Crushers will be playing the winner of the Niagara East Hockey League on Friday Port Dover leads Caledonia 31 but the location of game one hasnt been decided at press time
