The Herald Halton Board of Education will receive for 1991 expen ditures from the NDP provincial government an increase of over the 1990 actual grants It was roughly what we ex pected said Superintendent of Business Services Jerry Jenkins Were pleased there was no reduction in grants and the small increase will help us complete our budget The 1032124 increase works out to a per cent boost over last years 69429000 sum But Halton Hills trustee Dick Howitt said although the govern ment is giving more grant money theyre actually con tributing a smaller percentage of the total budget In 1990 the government grant represented approximately per cent of the total board budget This year the makes up 25 per cent of the budget he said Looking back over the years youll see this as a trend At one point the government covered per cent of the budget The less the provincial government pays the more money the taxpayer has to pay he added Once the taxpayer paid for per cent of the budget they now pay 75 per cent The details of the operating grants to Ontario school boards were released March and boards analysis of the funding was presented to the financial com mittee Tuesday night Once the figures were in the boards budget staff was able to finalize the boards Expen diture Budget which was presented to board trustees for their perusal Thursday night share of the provincial funding is part of the billion the government has allocated to school board operating grants Ontario has provided a fair and responsible increase in fun ding to school boards for 199192 said Education Minister Marion Boyd But the boards will need to watch their spending carefully The circumstances of the recession do not hide the fact that a major overhaul of education finance is needed in Ontario ad ded Mrs Boyd The government is determined to raise the provin cial share of education costs over the next five years This can be accomplished only through change brought about by a hard look at the present funding system in consultation with On tarios educational community The provincial operating grants to school boards will be part of an estimated expenditure of more than 131 billion on
