Political Forum Ottawa Report Tax revolt needed to wake more people up There are a tot of people in this area who think taxes are too high There have recently been angry meetings in Burlington and Caledon for example as people came together to grouse about how much governments are demanding these days In each case I have tried to talk to the organizers and thank them for what theyre doing We need a tax revolt in this country to wake more people up And I have nothing but admiration for those willing to take the time to try and influence the system and work for lower taxes Governments at all levels need to be more aware that there are four or five set of taxes there is only one set of taxpayer pockets Most of the tax protests have been directed at local govern ment simply because its easier to take on the school board or municipal counci than It is to af fect Queen s Park or Ottawa But often the problem isnt a local one Often property taxes are high to carry out some pro gram which the province has decided we should have like kindergarten classes There just isnt enough coordination and co operation in this country For ex ample did you know that the pro vince of Ontario is suing the Government of Canada over the GST and using our tax dollars to finance the useless court challenge Last week in Ottawa I tried to draw attention to some of these things by holding a conference on spending debt and taxes The goal was to raise awareness that we have a huge debt and that leads directly to huge interest payments and huge taxes to finance those payments The audience was very mixed grassroots tax leaders big business leaders economists students and politicians in cluding Michael Wilson I got the Canadian Chamber of Commerce to fly in its Debt Clock from Van couver and it ticked away all day recording million ln new debts as the conference took Garth Turner MP HaltonPeel Conwnrattve Dave Page was there to present a cheque to Wilson on behalf of the Halton Hills and Burlington Chambers of Commerce I gave a cheque to Wilson from the Bolton Lions Club And the people in the room passed a pot and con tributed in small bills and loonies to help reduce the coun trys debt It was a fascinating day And a controversial one Some of the media people there were more in terested in a 12yearold kid who raised at a garage sale also for the deficit than they were in the bigger themes I guess I should have anticipated that one but it took me completely by sur prise In any case it was worth all the work In my mind there is nothing that threatens the wealth of middle class people more than excessive taxation And if we didnt have that national debt our taxes could be almost per cent lower than they are today Of course if thats ever to hap pen we have to expect less government lower spending and fewer services More CBC cuts less universality of social pro grams special interest groups cut off more civil servants axed The critics of the Conservatives will not like this Youll hear them telling you that it really doesnt matter if Canada con tinues to run annual deficits Theyll make the argument that this is the same as having a mor tgage on your house Sure having a national debt is like having a mortgage But when Queens Park Report Sunday shopping As you may remember the Supreme Court of Ontario last summer ruled that the legislation governing Sunday and holiday shopping the Retail Business Holidays Act was unconstitu tional That ruling was appealed to the Ontario Court of Appeal last September Just a few days ago the Court of Appeal overturn ed the decision of the Supreme Court and upheld the constitu tionality of the Act The Retail Business Holidays Act requires most retail stores to dose on Sundays and other specified holidays There are ex emption including those for cer tain types of stores essential ser vices and a Sabbatarian exemp tion for those who observe a day of worship other than Sunday The regulation of Sunday and holiday shopping has been one of the priorities of our government and Solicitor General Mike Far- nan Informed the legislature on March that Ontario police are being instructed to enforce the law immediately The recent Court decision has provided us with a starting point for improvements to the legisla tion regarding a common pause day Mr has stated that the people of Ontario deserve legislation that can be clearly in terpreted and fairly applied His Ministry has been engaged in a thorough analysis of the Court of Appeal decision and has been consulting with affected groups Discussions have involved representatives of the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Noel North MPP Tourism and Recreation Many of you have already contacted me with your comments about Sun day shopping and I have forward ed your recommendations to the Solicitor General Regarding other business at Queens Park Environment Minister Ruth Grier has announc ed tighter controls on the use of pesticides Effective April 1st a revised regulation under the Pesticides Act will provide stricter controls over chemical pesticides use setting out better and clearer safety procedures for manufacturers vendors licens ed applicators and other users of chemical pesticides Through the Ontario pesticides Education Program based at the College of Agricultural Technology ven dors growers and agricultural applicators of pesticides are trained in the proper handling application storage and transportation of these chemicals Some persons Continued on Page 21 you also run a deficit every year thats the same as increasing the mortgage And right now Canada is increasing its by 58000 a minute Thats money which will have to be paid back Running a deficit means deferring todays taxes in to the future and weve been do ing that for twenty years My fundamental reason for wanting to be an MP was to change that so some day wed be able to see lower taxes and an end to the pillage of middle class wealth The conference I had in Ottawa was a part of that So is my support for the groups of tax payers who are now saying they pay too much and who are look ing for ways to achieve less government and a lower tax bill If you feel the same way let us know The PLUMBING BOUTIQUE Coleman Filtration System pmTrng New Roma COLEMAN BUY A COLEMAN And Receive A COLEMAN COOLER FREE Reverse Osmosis Our
