decree Local reaction appears to be mixed to the announcement made by Ontario s Minister of the Environment Ruth Tues day in Toronto on dump sites m and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area Protect Our Water and En vironmental Resources President Barbara and Incineration Counteracts the Environment ICE member Rita Landry both said Wednesday they sup port the minister s decision to ex empt Halton from providing waste disposal sites for the Greater Toronto Area They also concur that Ms Is headed in the right tion when she states waste must be disposed of as close to the source of generation as possi ble This is a good thing said Ms She explained that the closer the disposal site is to the source of garbage the greater the incentive for people in that area to reduce the amount of gar bage they produce The two environmentalists are worried however that the Acton dump site proposal located just south of Highway could still be used by the province as an in terim site to dump garbage exemption from pro viding disposal sites for the 1A coincides with the provinces at tempt to find enough landfill capacity to last the GTA many years according to Ms Grier announcement But Ms Gner also said if ex GTA landfill sites reach capacity before the new long term sites can be found interim dumps may be required Ms Halsall is worried if the Ac ton dump proposal receives pro approval which could possibly happen sometime this year the site could be used as an interim site Halton Regional Chairman Peter said yesterday he interpreted Ms Grier s an merit as implying the pro vince t use the Acton dump if approved as an interim landfill site However he did say Ms Gner announcement didn pre vent the proposal s applicant Milton based Reclamations Systems Incorporated from car rying was responding to a Regional council debate day on what color the exterior of the Regional Council Chambers should be painted Before going any further it should be realized the Halton Region Administration Building is the equivalent to the Halton Hills Civic Centre but for all of Halton Region As part of the ongoing expan of the Building Council had to decide the new Council Chamber exterior should be re painted green or grey Johnson s claim was a s gn of h s frustration with a debate he understand was happening in the first place Who cares what color it is m more worried that the construe lion is done properly Coun Johnson lamented Needless to state council ended up voting for the existing green color The majority of councillors supported the idea that green represented the building s heritage and therefore should be retained ByBENDUMMETT The Herald The transfer of the privately operated postal station in is no big deal said Marion VUo coowner of Vito s Market on Highway 7 and the postal station operator before it was moved northward late last month Its really nothing said Ms Vito Wednesday in response to Canada Post moving the service to Acton The postal service as operated out of handled packages that needed a signature before they could be left at the address residence If no one was home to sign for the package it was dropped off at Vito to be picked Ms said the store never dealt with many packages at a time The store gave up the service at the end of March the paper work associated with the job was too much to justify the continuation of the service ex plained Ms Vito Halton Peel MP Garth Turner however is extremely upset with Canada Post s handling of the transfer In a letter addressed to Canada Post Corporation President Don Lander Mr Turner writes the closure of Limehouse Postal ser vice runs counter to the corpora Hon publicly stated position that postal service in rural Canada will be enhanced not lessened He goes on to say no effective notice whatsoever was given to these residents That as well s counter to the Corpora s stated operating pro cedures Mr Turner points out the owners of Vito s informed Canada Post Feb 20 they would no longer provide postal service effective at the end of March But the corporation only informed Limehouse residents Mar 22 that service for call for items would be transferred to Acton starting Mar He also writes he only found out about the change in location Mar 26 Contacled Tuesday Canada Post spokesperson Chris Bartsch explained people t told Region in good shape Despite the recession Halton is in good financial shape Hills Regional Councillor and Ad ministration and Finance com mittee member Pam Johnston told Regional council Wednes day To prove her point Coun Johnston compared s debt situation in 1990 with that in She told council the amount of money Halton paid to its debt as a percentage of the Regions total revenue in 1983 was 16 per cent That percentage was only per cent last year said the coun Coun Johnston said only six cents of every Regional dollar goes towards paying off s debt a figure that is significantly lower than it was in 1963 she said current debt amounts to per person in the Region pointed out Johnson The Regions population is approximately 270 people Garth Turner about the relocation of the ser vice until it was determined there was no other location in Limehouse that could take over the service In his letter Mr Turner in dicates he was told by a Canada Post Official the delay in public notification resulted from the time needed to translate the notice into French Mr Bartsch said he couldn t confirm this explanation Mr Turner writes in his letter I am not aware of anyone in Limehouse who speaks French as a first language so delaying com munit ice for translation was inappropriate Mr Bartsch said all public notification must be done m English and French in ac with Canada Post policy Mr Turner also objected to the Limehouse service being relocated to Acton It is in cons stent with your commitment to good postal service to require residents to drive to Acton to get their mail when the community is much closer to Georgetown Mr Bartsch said all Limehouse mail emanates out of Acton It makes more sense therefore to have people drive to Acton than to transfer the Limehouse mail to Georgetown and have residents pickitupthere heexplained Spring Ahead Residents of Hills should be aware and ready to Spring Ahead this weekend as Daylight Saving time takes over once again The among us will lament that we will lose an hour of sleep Daylight Saving time officially kicks In at 2 a Sunday morn ing when all clocks should be moved an boar ahead Just to be on the safe side however for hose who get under
