wrestling on the rebound By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor The 199091 season has marked the return of Rebel wrestling to Georgetown District High School with a vengeance The school has had a 20year tradition of being a force to be reckoned with across the pro vince After a three year absence GDHS has taken by storm most recently winning the Halton Junior Championships at Bishop Reding on March Jim Hall head of the Physical Education department at in charge of the wrestling pro gram which has more than equalled the success he expected this year My goal was to win the junior championships which we did I was a little concerned because most of the team had never wrestled before Now I m hoping to finish in the top four in the Championships last Thursday at GDHS and advance to the GHAC Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference Hall said he was very happy with the response he received when he started getting the wrestling program going again A core of 25 students joined up and have stuck with it all the way through They ve been great One of the reasons we done so well is the committment theyve had coming out to all the practices and working hard all the time Hall also credited assistant coaches Jeff Moon Tim Dixon and Dave Power for their con tnbutions to the team All three are former Rebel wrestlers themselves with Dixon also ing been a Canadian champion Hall is also a key part of the team success this year having wrestled nationally and interna A former Rebel wrestler himself Hall has also coached the sport in different parts of the United States Hall said he has high hopes for next years team since only a few of his athletes will be graduating and many more new ones can be added After things got going this year I had a lot of guys telling me they were interested but it was too late for them to join up It likely we 11 have a very good team next year Something else Hall believes will make Georgetown wrestling even stronger is the re establishment of wrestling in the local elementary schools It gets a lot of the kids more familiarized with the sport earlier making them even more competitive in high school We re working on that with Centennial and
