Page 8 THE WEEKEND OUTLOOK Friday April 26 1991 Frank Grant wary of museum plans Until recommendations outlin ed in a report on bow to improve Canada Military Museums becomes reality Prank Grant owner and operator of the dian Military Studies Museum in Limehouse will remain wary of the report s findings The report makes recom suggesting the federal government give 4 million over five years in special grants to Military Museums and several other recommendations that call for building im to Military Museums across the country Ninety per cent of the museums surveyed used damp basements mechanical rooms cramped closets or custodians offices for storage states the report As well artifacts are subjected to very real and imminent danger in many cases from overhead steam drainage and sewage pipes faulty electrical sweating walls leaking ceilings and appalling dirt and mold Other reports have made similar recommendations in the past said Mr Grant but they ve amounted to nothing more than smoke I m waiting to see some fire before getting excited about the report he said To this point in time the Federal Government has only paid lip service to trie tion of Canada s military vice he added Mr Grant who has been in the Military Museum business for the last 20 years said his museum t as bad shape as many of those described in the report The Canadian Military Studies Museum is comprised of two buildings one of which is temperature controlled and another which is not Ideally said Mr Grant both should be temperature controlled As well there is not enough space for pro per parking or washroom facilities he said Mr Grant said his museum which is a non profit organiza is the only one of its kind to service the to Niagara Falls area The next closest war museum to the Greater Toronto Area is In Ottawa he said Mr Grant said he would need to improve the museum so that it could open on a regular basis and accommodate the various schools boards in the Greater Toronto Area A lack of funds means Mr Grant and his wife operate the museum alone As a result the museum is open to the public on an appointment only basis he said With improved facilities the museum could make a profit Currently Mr Grant relies on donations but most of the funding comes from his own pocket Mr Grant blamed museum operators in Ontario as the reason a number of museums are currently in poor shape A number of operators are not pro fessionally trained to run a museum he said Many are run as and as a result are not always properly cared for Frank Grant owner anil operator of the Canadian Studies Museum in house about a report submitted to Govern ment that recommends Canadian Museums be significant upgraded To date It e government has paid lip service the preservation Canada
