IB yearsold said program coordinator Bert Cocks The grade 10 students enrolled could belong to the work force two to three years ahead of other technical students who arent enrolled in the program At present approximately 20 Georgetown students have enroll ed in the program to apprentice as either a carpenter fitter- welder or machinist The majority of the students have chosen carpentry and these students might have to wait a lit tie longer to get jobs said Mr Cocks Because of the economic times and building slowdown we might not be able to find everybody jobs he said Thats why weve kept the pro gram flexible If we can get them a position in the summer they can work on their apprenticeship and then return to school and earn school credits when work slows down in the winter Most of the student apprentices will work from this June to February of next year spend a semester earning their Grade 12 credits in school and go back out to their apprenticeship position The major benefit of the pro gram is that students can learn the marketable skills required by industry now earn apprentice wage rates per cent of a journeymans wage and that theyll be exempt for a good part of the college portion of training Mr Lawrence said another ad vantage of the program is it gives many students a purpose to be in school so many students may abandon ideas of quitting and stay in school
