evacuation Halton Regional Police report two Acton residences were evacuated after construction workers representing Atlas Cor poration broke a gas line while digging in the area of Wallace St and Georgetown and remov ed the stereo equipment Police are continuing to investigate School equipment stolen Police suspect that an television and Sharp VCR may have been stolen from Georgetown District High School during the prom held Friday night They say sometime bet ween Friday and Monday the equipment valued at was taken from the school Fire calls Overheated stove Hallon Hills firefighters took approximtely an hourandahalf to ex tinguish a small blaze in a Georgetown garage located on a residen tial property Sunday afternoon The fire started when a wood stove m the garage overheated Firefighters estimate damage at to the walls of the garage Halton Hills firefighters say they dont know how long a man was trapped inside his totalled Porsche before two offduty firefighters found him a farmers field at Sideroad and Line at522am Thursday morning The two offduty firefighters called police and the Halton Hills fire department who needed an extrication tool to pry open the drivers door and remove 39yearold Ross West of Oakville from the wreck of his car Firefighters believe Mr West lost control of the car on a curve on Sideroad and skidded approximately 100 feet before rolling over and settling in the farmers field Mr West was taken to Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital He was still hospital Thursday afternoon Firefighters also responded to three other calls this week One was to a home on Bairstow Crescenbt where occupants were complaining there was a smell of burning rubber in their home Firefighters found that the furnace motor belt had seized up and was burning There was no damage On Wednesday firefighters responded to a medical assist call on the Line north of Sideroad but werent required to administer ox ygen as ambulance crews had already arrived Also on Wednesday firefighters responded to an alarm activation at the Bennett Centre in Georgetown Firefighters say the alarm was caused by a malfunction in one of the smoke detectors Learn to Drive Authority General Manager Vicki Barron Wednes day In making the comment during the Regional Planning and Public Works Committee meeting Ms Barron said other municipalities have not always exemplified Haltons concern for the Credit River when constructing projects along its banks According to Ms Barron poor construction practices especial ly with respect to land stripping by municipalities and private in dustry are the major cause behind a Credit River pollutant sediment Sediment is comprised of soil particles from land strip ped during the construction pro cess said Ms Barron Upon entering the Credit as runoff the particles can destroy areas for fish she said Aside from commending the Regions construction practices to ensure sediment runoff into the river doesnt occur Ms Barron also urged committee members to force private industry to exer cise the same care Ms Barron urged councillors to implement a bylaw requiring any developer to revegetate a stripped piece of land along the river within a certain time period She predicted there would be opposition to such a bylaw but the rivers health depended on it General Committee recom mended staff write a report on the feasibility
