Page TOE WEEKEND OUTLOOK Friday May 31 1991 Community Halton transportation system By BEN The Herald Despite not being economically feasible at the present time a public transportation system con necting Halton Hills with municipalities in the south area of Halton should be established in the near future says Regional Chairman Peter Pomeroy Chairman Pomeroy made his comments Wednesday following a Regional Planning and Public Works meeting During the meeting Halton Regions transportation consultants Jack Diamond and Bob unveil ed a transportation strategy for an improved public transit system to service the more populated areas in Halton Since the greatest portion of population is located in Oakville and Burlington both located on south Halton the con focused on an improved public transportation system for these municipalities during their presentation However during his Hon Mr said a north south transit system should be established sooner rather than later despite there being an insuf number of people in Halton Hills to make the service pay for itself Chairman Pomeroy said money from the Regional tax base should be used to support a transit link connecting the north and south areas of Halton to enhance the community feeling is aiming for higher profile Seeing a shopping mall is a publicity person paradise it makes sense the Credit Valley Conservation Authority will use this type of facility to make itself more widely known Starting next year the CVCA will establish displays at various shopping centres throughout the authority jurisdiction which in dudes the Halton Hills area to better inform the public of its ser vices and the conservation areas it operates said CVCA Com munication Director Robert Peace Tuesday Public visibility is one exam pie of how the authority can 1m prove community awareness said Mr Peace The authority oversees the Credit River watershed from Orangeville to Lake Ontario at Port Credit As well it operates conservation areas including the Terra Cotta Conservation Area in nearby Terra Cotta recent report done by Sheridan College students on behalf of the authority said Mr Peace confirmed his gut feel ing that the authority has an awareness problem As a result the authority will spend the next year introducing new programs to increase its pro file Georgetown was one of the few areas profiled by the Sheridan students where a relatively high number of people knew about the authority and what it does said Mr Peace As part of the authority s publicity campaign there are plans to open up certain CVCA lands to the public That means non used CVCA lands will be publicized as nature areas for hiking and fishing explained Mr Peace It is this type of recreation tivity that the CVCA wants to pro mote rather than theme park facilities he said The Sheridan College sludy showed most people want the CVCA lands to remain as close to their natural state as possible said Mr Peace Hiking trails and fishing holes are activities con ducive to the maintenance of the natural surroundings he said As well these types of ac tivities are much less expensive for the CVCA to establish and maintain Expenditures are of great concern to the authority since the provincial government catc The Board of Directors and Staff of CHILDREN S ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT CENTRE will hold their Annual General Meeting Wednesday June 12 1991 5306 at CATC MILTON 255 Ontario SL a Milton has not increased the CVCA s yearly funding by more than four per cent for several years said Mr Peace among all people in Halton and to provide services throughout the Region more efficiently The transit system would per the Region to establish cen tralized services instead of to spread them out throughout Halton as is done now said Chairman To illustrate his point Chair man used the example of medical and social services Professionals in these fields acknowledge it is better if people can access these services and still remain at home he said To accomplish this goal now equivalent services must be established in both the south and north areas of Halton because of no connecting transportation system at present However if a north south link was established then only a cen service would be re quired said the chairman And a centralized facility is better than several smaller ones he added The Region will present the strategy to Halton Hills Council and the general public June at the Halton Hills Civic Centre Peter Pan production Allisson will star as Peter Pan when dancers from the Halton Hills School of Dancing present the story
