think what life would be like without the hospital For many people however it seem so long ago that a trip to the hospital meant a drive of 20 or 30 kilometers 15 to 20 miles those days to Brampton orGuelph Jack Gunn clearly remembers those days He was Georgetown Hospital s first Chairman of the Board and in a recent interview from his Ontario home offered these thoughts on life before Georgetown Hospital Wbat was the driving force behind the creation of Georgetown Hospital Gunn In the early 1950s the towns and around Toronto were growing rapidly In fact in Georgetown our population had increased by per cent in just five years Yet the nearest hospital was located in Brampton and Guelph Like Georgetown these areas too were expanding and their hospitals were desperately trying to keep pace with the growth By the mid it became ob vious to many of us in the com munity that a hospital in our area was the answer So in 1954 the Georgetown Chamber of Com merce began looking at ways to encourage development in the town It was determined that one to attract interest would be with the establishment of a local What role did the Chamber play In 1954 the Chamber of Commerce established an open public forum where a number of representatives from the newly established Hospital were invited to discuss their own experiences in building a hospuital irj their community What was the outcome of the forum Gunn A committee in Georgetown was then formed that included a number of local people As well there was con involvement by the community through fund raising activities by local service clubs charitable organizations and church groups When was the decision final made to proceed with the Hospital Gunn In addition to the monies raised by the community we received a bed grant from County We also presented a detailed proposal to the provincial government outlln big the reasons why a hospital was needed in our area By the government granted us our charter and gave the Committee Public Health and General Practitioners Providing topquality patient services is Georgetown Hospitals primary goal and is a commitment that began when the Hospital first opened its doors in
