Georgetown Parent Child Centre Tuesday evening on streetproofing children she began her lecture by stressing that she is not an ex pert on the topic Im not an expert Ms McKay explained No one can say they are an expert on this matter A former columnist with the Toronto Star and author of three books on child safety Ms McKay explained to parents that because the problems of child abuse and child violence are increasing the old phrase of telling your children not to talk to strangers is not enough any more During her two hour lecture entitled Gently and Creatively also the title of her most recent publication she stated that people were very disturbed when she first began lecturing years ago in treal She says when she came to Canada from Ireland 10 years ago one social worker was ap palled when she tried to obtain in formation from her on child violence During her first lecture she said half the people got up and left within the first few minutes We are the first generation of young so they feel com fortable talking about the topic She says children who feel un comfortable about the topic of sex will be less likely to ask im portant questions or approach their parents if they are abused A mother of two young boys Ms McKay stresses the im portance of telling children they are loved She has spoken to many groups of children and feels most believe at some point parental love disappears As our children become older it becomes harder and harder for us to tell them we love them and as they get older they often need to hear it even more Ms McKays last step on street
