the HERALD THE HERALD Wednesday June 26 1991 Council Brief Council supports Region decision on garbage issue Halton Hills Council in support of a decision by Region Planning and Public Works Com mittee recommended Monday the province should hold a hear ing in connection with an applica tion by Georgetowns Transfer Station to increase the capacity of garbage it handles The transfer station currently handles garbage originating in Hills and Milton It has ap plied to the province to handle garbage from anywhere in On tario The province will make the final decision on the ap plication but before a decision is made the Town and Region are required to comment As with the Regional Planning and Public Works Committee Town councillors felt a hearing should be held because it has con cerns about truck traffic and the possibility the Regions waste disposal system could be negatively impacted if the ap plication is approved No to trees Despite appeals from the residents living in Halton Hills Estate subdivision in Stewart- town Council decided Monday to uphold an earlier decision not to plant trees throughout the subdivision Ed Stephen representing the residents of the subdivision told council that in accordance with the subdivision agreement signed by the Town and the developer Hills Development Cor poration certain public services work had to be completed The developer was meant to finish this work but was unable after falling into financial trouble in April The subdivision agreement in cluded a letter of credit for so the town could take over the work However the staff report indicates the work will cost more than provided for in the letter of credit Council decided the tree plan ting wasnt essential to the sub division so that expense of was cut from the work the Town would do Councillor Anne said Monday the general taxpayer will have to cover the amount not covered by the letter of credit For this reason council decided to only cover the essentials she said Mr Stephen said a request for tree planting might seem like a small issue but if councillors understood the aggravation the residents have experienced they would understand the reason in making the request No opposition There was no opposition to a proposal to build three townhouses on the corner of Church Street and John Street in Acton during a public meeting Monday Acton resident Shannon Gordon was the only member of the public who spoke on the applica tion Speaking in favor of the ap plication Ms Gordon said the projects design shows it is easy to realize how the will enhance the neighborhood There is currently a single family house shed and garage on the property Staff to investigate Town Council directed staff Monday to investigate whether it would be feasible to include of fices as part of a commercial plaza scheduled to be located at the corner of Guelph Street and McFarlane Drive in Georgetown Staff was also directed to con sider whetheri or not a gas bar andor a car wash should be per mitted as part of the plaza Realtors supported In response to requests from local realtors Gary Brand and Finn on the issue of realtors being permitted to open their offices on
