Herald Vince Vital owner of Carina Italian Bakery and Delicatessen at 360 Street in Georgetown was fined 000 din ing a Milton court hearing Thurs day for not having a licence to operate a restaurant said Town Bylaw Enforcement Officer Bob following the hearing In response to a public com plaint about the restaurant s operation the Town first in spected the establishment last November At that time Mr Vital was discovered to be operating the delicatessen without a licence said Mr Ustrzycki He explained the Town will on ly issue a restaurant licence after the owner has given the Town a Certificate of Clearance from Regional Police the Regional Health Department Town Zoning Department the Town building inspector and Halton Hills Fire Department A licence has not been submit ted to Mr Vitah because he t produced a certificate of clearance from the Hills fire department said Mr Subsequent to the Town in of the restaurant last November Mr Ustrzycki said Town Bylaw Enforcement Of ficer Ron Stein has visited the restaurant nine other times in an attempt to obtain the fire depart issued Certificate of Clearance United Way surprise Joe Cleary ran into the United Way office on Trafalgar Road In Georgetown Monday with a surprise for United Way treasurer Lois Mr Cleary on behalf of the Georgetown Runners Club and the Credit Valley Conservation Authority presented her with a ings postponement Mr Vitdli said the court told him upon returning to Georgetown to con tact the court and arrange for a suitable hearing date By last Thursday he contacted the court nor had the court contacted him Mr was unable to pro vide the Herald with the name of the person he talked with at Milton Court Mr Ustrzycki said the fire department issued a Cer of Clearance because there are some problems with the wiring in the restaurant Mr said if Mr Vitali doesn t obtain the Certificate of Clearance within a reasonable amount of time he will seek a court injunction to close down the the challenge Eye of the tiger By BETSY CORNWELL Herald Special The old adage about tigers not being able to change their stripes certainly has held true for Georgetown resident Keith Rieger Over 10 years ago Keith was a schoolboy track and field cham pton in Grads 6 and but the run bug went dormant for a lengthy period and didn t flare up again until recently The intervening years saw Rieger keeping in shape with a variety of pursuits such as hockey motocross windsurfing and mountain biking In the fall of he took up running again for run and entered the Toronto Marathon where he placed well with the en tirely respectable time of 2 hours and minutes Some friends who were on athletic scholarships south of the border urged Keith to get serious about his running and go after his own athletic scholarship at an American university Since graduating from high school Keith has completed the Sheridan Business Program through part time enrollment while being selfemployed I realized a university education would open more doors for me in the business world I am grateful to further my academic background whilst doing the same for my running career he said Rieger started training with Brian Barnes a former National Coach in October of last year and almost immediately started com in and winning American road races In October of he won the Holden Beach North Carolina race setting a new course record Over the winter some muscle problems surfaced from the intense training but a two month layoff and minor surgery in February corrected the pro blem He won his first race following the lay off in March of set ting another course record in the Buffalo Equinox run goal of obtaining an American athletic scholarship was ambitious for a complete unknown who had not progressed through the usual US high school competition and never been scouted He realized he needed a higher profile to attract attention so he decided to enter the world largest race in Carlsbad California in April Out of the 8 enthusiastic amateur entrants he finished with a time of IS and attracted the desired interest among col lege coaches A week later he proved it was no fluke by winning again this time in the West Palm Beach Florida Law Day 5k race From road races he turned to track events and concentrating on the 3000m distance clocked a time of in his first race ad ding clout to his negotiating tion
