8771211 High speed chase Halton Regional Police Of ficers were led on a highspeed chase by a man July 2 who was later charged with dangerous driving Police first observed the suspect passing several cars at a high rate of speed on an S turn with oncom ing traffic on Hwy 7 west of the Line The officers had just pulled their onto Hwy but were forced off the road by the speeding Ford Custom The officers turned around and gave chase as the driver raced to where he was observ ed stopping in a sub division When the officers ap proached the man attempted to drive away but rode up a steep embankment and almost rolled his car The suspect fled on foot and police werent able to catch him He was later apprehended and charged with dangerous driv ing- Unhappy smoker Police report an unknown suspect smashed a gas pump glass window after a gas atten dant refused to serve him last Thursday Police say the suspect attempted to purchase gasoline at Toth Motors in Acton but would not extinguish a cigarette he was smoking when asked the atten dant then refused to serve the smoking customer who smashed the pump glass in anger causing 25 damage Police have no suspects Theft charges An employee and customer at in Georgetown were charged with theft under after they conspired to steal worth of merchandise from the store last Thursday Police say a Georgetown woman selected worth of store merchandise and brought it up to a cash register where it was rung through as only on a manual receipt No money- received for the purchase Both women will appear in Milton Court August 12 Sports enthusiasts Police are looking for two teenage males who were observ ed removing sporting equipment from the Georgetown District High School sport shed playing with it and then returning it last Thursday Police havent deter mined if any items were stolen from the shed and are still in vestigating the incident Booth Breakin The Ball Park con cession booth was broken into this past weekend police report Unknown suspects forced their way into the booth with a crow bar and stole four cases of pop and seven cases of chips worth Fight investigated Police are interviewing local and Toronto eye a broken nose and a cut mouth during a fight at the establishment He was kept in hospital for two days Vehicle vandalized An Acton womans- Pontiac was damaged by unknown culprits while she watched the fireworks at the Acton Legion on Canada Day police report The victims windshield was smashed causing 220 damage while it was parked on Wright Avenue at Gould Drive in Acton Property owners litterbit lax Two Haltoh Hills property owners were charged and respectively Thursday dur ing a Milton court hearing for contravening the Towns Litter ing Bylaw said Town Bylaw En forcement Officer Bob following the hearing The numbered company 747359 Ontario Limited was charged for accumulating used tires on its Winston Churchill property in Norval while resident Ivo Jolic was charged for storing used household appliances farming equipment and lumber on his property at 28 Adamson Street in Mr said the Town had tried for the past three mon ths to have the numbered com pany clean up the property but to no avail There is an indication that peo ple unknown to the property owners were dumping tires However the responsiblity for dean up lies with the owner he said We the Town dont want a tire fire to break out said Mr The owners were given a reasonable amount of time to clean up the property and take measures to prevent people from gaining access to the property but they did nothing No representatives for the numbered company attended the hearing In the case of Mr Jolic Mr safd he was also given a reasonable amount of time to clean up the property before charges were laid Mr Manpower Odd job blitz planned By LISA BOONSTOPPELPOT The Herald On July the Canada Employment Centre for students will close Before it does however centre supervisors are going on an odd job blitz Supervisor Chris wants to make sure as many students make money this sum mer as possible so hes started the odd job squad a program matching jobless students to odd jobs We get at least one call a day from householders and businessmen just needing a helpful hand for a day or week said Mr People want someone to babysit paint their fence or help move things around Hes made a special board listing the odd jobs in the centre and compiled a list of students who are willing and able to work with little notice for a day here and there If someone calls we can usually get them a person that day said Mr We have a couple of pages of names of students looking to make extra money with the odd jobs To get on the odd job squad students can call the office at or visit the office at 232 Guelph St between and during the week- Mr said although businesses are still required to pay minimum wage for odd jobs householders arent We suggest that householders offer a lump sum for the work they want done or offer competitive wages so more students will be in terested he said For students still hoping to get a summer job there are approximately 25 regular job openings available A description of the job and what it pays is pinn ed up on the job search board at the centre Since the centre opened in late April staff have been able to pro vide students with summer jobs The figure is significantly lower than last years figure of approximately jobs filled but Mr said thats because there were fewer jobs available and some students held out because wages were lower Besides job placement the cen tre offers career counselling and job searching technique courses to students which were popular with students said Mr Fer Personally Mr said hes found working at the centre an excellent opportunity I got a broad range of experience in dealing with the media and the public which will aid me in my next job After the centre closes Mr Fernandes will start his new job as an information officer with Metro Torontos Department of Public Works Student Placement Officer Nancy Albers of Georgetown has also found working at the cen tre a rewarding experience I learned a lot in respect to job searching and
