Wednesday July 1991 the HERALD Business Youre never too young to start saving for the future Tyler Transport signs major contract By STEVEN The Herald Located in Acton Tyler Transport Limited a company with almost as much history as its home town will soon be wheel ing and dealing with Carpenter Manufacturing of Mitchell In diana one of North Americas largest manufacturers of buses Tyler Transport which is in the freight and bus service will act as the Ontario Distributor of Carpenter Buses Tim Durham VicePresident of Marketing and Corporate Development for Carpenter Manufacturing ap pointed Tyler Transport as its Ontario distributor in May The two companies had been talking over the agreement for the past three or four years I felt it was a good product or I wouldnt have taken it on said Ted Tyler president of Tyler Transport Tyler Transport Limited was established on May 1929 by Mr Tylers father Edward Tyler He explained that at the time trucking was a relatively new business and that his father thought that it would be pro fitable His first office and garage were set up in Acton on Mill Street Mr Tylers father dealt with the majority of the businesses in the area because the trucking industry was new At the time Tyler Transport Ltd was exclusively in the freight service business It wasnt until that the com pany expanded to cover busing services Mr Tyler explained he was brought in the business from an early age As a boy he would ac company his father on deliveries and help wash trucks and buses He became a shareholder in the company in and officially took over operations in when his father died He said that there is a market for bus service in the area and that this new business from the United States will be beneficial to the Acton area Its an unknown factor how much business it will bring to the area said Mr Tyler As far as Im concerned however anything coming into Acton will be a plus Presently Tyler Transport deals with Blue Bird buses and Thomas buses but Mr Tyler ex plained soon he will be dealing primarily with buses From Carpenter Manufacturing Tyler Transport currently employs bet ween SO and GO people the Hills area He explained that Tyler Transport was chosen by Carpenter Manufacturing because of its knowledge of the busing industry and its long stan ding stability and recognition in the area Mr Tylers daughter Angela has also been involved with the company from an early age She began washing buses for her father and now handles dispatch calls and operations He explain ed that his daughter has shown interest in making the business her lifes work He has another daughter Tracy who is a reporter with the Toronto Star Mr Tyler explained that there have been tough times along the way for the business his father stared over years ago He states that a combination of hard work and good fortune have kept the company afloat You need to put in that extra effort when times are tough Peo ple in the area know that if you want to succeed five oclock doesnt necessarily mean closing time stated Mr Tyler Weve also had some good fortune by be ing in the right place at the right time Kids he said It was a friend of mine speak ing and he began to tell me about how proud he was of his teenage daughter who had chosen to work at a summer camp for July and August 1990 as a counsellor and instructor for the young peo ple coming there for a two week session at camp She did not need to work as financially the family did not need the money but she wanted to work to be independent Dad had picked her up from the camp on a Friday at the end of the season and driven her home Her total takehome pay for the summer had just been paid to her After deductions for lodging food snacks etc it amounted to for the two months work On Monday she went out and spent it all Is there anything wrong with that Certainly not But what if and that is a big WHAT IF our school system had taught financial matters in the school system particularly the formula for financial success namely TIME plus MONEY plus RATE of RETURN Add to that statement that we should save a part of everything we earn What if she had been taught these formulas and applied them to her meager earnings at camp What if she had taken a part of what she earned such as 10 pe cent and invested the into a mutual fund such as Growth Fund which averaged 15 per cent over the years and left it until retirement and age She was years old then That 50 would be worth at age Would she have missed that Probably she would have only been able to spend But would it have been worth it If she had invested it and it was worth at age 65 that could have been converted to a monthly income of per month per year Statistics today tell us that if a woman lives to age she is ex pected to live another twenty years That means she would have collected 5300 20 years per year in retirement benefits Because she invested If our school system would teach these simple financial facts and we Canadians learn ed them and employed them in our lives we would all end up financially independent able to purchase more goods and ser vices which in turn would create more jobs which in turn would mean more profitable com panies which in turn would eliminate the huge government deficits Then there would be some chance of tax rates being lowered however larger earn ings by us and employers would bring in more taxes which would still leave us with more to spend and if we spend more then more people would be employed and on and on If we continue as so many of us do and spend all that we earn or do save for a while only to spend all our savings down the road on luxury items or grand vacations we always have to struggle limiting our wealth which means fewer jobs produc ing goods and services cant af ford to buy fewer factories and services earning monies our governments taxing us at higher percentages to fulfill their vast appetite for money leaving us with even less to spend fewer and so on By not investing 50 my friends daughter may have lost over in benefits which could have been used to purchase goods and services She spent that as most of the rest of us would and put it into the economy If she had saved it over would have been put into the economy later Just think of the cumulative effect if everyone saved and invested that way There are countries in Southeast Asia where the people do just that and its amazing how fast their economics are growing Are you and I a full spender For a free chart showing how a one lime investment in Growth Fund has
