given the Canadian tax situa tion compared to the United States I think the Canadian government has the right to charge sales tax on goods being brought into Canada It is money from sales tax that expensive and dangerous not wearing a seatbelt can be Thats the number of motorists two patrol constables with the Halton Regional Police stopped during the North Halton seatbelt blitz Each driver was given a 25 seatbelt fine and an in formation pamphlet warning motorists they are 21 times more likely to be killed in a collision if theyre not wearing their seatbelt In total motorists were stopped 170 drove away with on- ly a warning Our aim was to increase the compliance rate of wearers in this district Milton Georgetown and Acton said Crime Prevention Sergeant Dave Gwilliams We hope this blitz will bring people in line when another seat belt crackdown starts in October The reason the seatbelt blitz was initiated in this area is because out of all the Halton municipalities Halton Hills has Sgt Gwilliams the lowest seatbelt compliance rate per cent Milton has a per cent compliance rate while Burlingtons and Oakvilles rate is and per cent respectively Sergeant Gwilliams is hoping to find out if Halton Hills can get as high as an per cent com pliance rate when the patrol con stables set up spot checks at the same location as they did in May and June and check for seat belt compliance In this last crackdown on seatbelt offenders Sergeant found the public at titude to be very positive The public reaction was very pleasing he said Hopefully by charging all the people we did and talking to others weve changed the publics perception so that next time if they are stopped they like ly will be wearing their seat belts he concluded Main Street South Downtown Georgetown
