to sup ply funding for a project to pro vide Glen Williams with addi tional water Seatbelt compliance improving Halton Hills Crime Prevention officer Sergeant Dave Gwilliams is happy to report Halton Hills seatbelt compliance rate has risen to 79 per cent from 62 per cent Two patrol officers with the Regional Police Service spent Aug stopping motorists on Maple and Guelph Streets in Georgetown and Main and Mill Streets in Acton and found 79 per cent of drivers were wearing seat belts The other 21 per cent were warned or fined The seatbelt spot checks were held to see if a blitz held in May and June this year had any effect on the seatbelt com pliance rate in Hills Previously Halton Hills seatbelt compliance rate was only per cent However Hills com- rate is still the lowest in Region Miltons com pliance rate is per cent while and Burlingtons is 86 and per cent respectively The regional average is per cent But Sergeant Gwilliams is still happy with the results We accomplished what we set out to do which was to raise the compliance rate in Halton Hills he said We hope our surveys will have some effect in October which is provincial awareness month Two weeks ago Mayor Miller received a letter from the pro vinces Ministry of Environment in response to his request that the province fasttrack a request for funding for the project The province has indicated it will fund the Glen Williams water project only when money becomes available meaning when the project is considerred a high enough priority by the pro vince The project will cost million with the provincial government expected to fund per cent and the Region and the Town covering the remaining costs Mayor Miller stated that- money has been set aside by the Region and the Town and that all that is needed is the provinces share The province has also stated that only If additional informa tion concerning the project is made available or conditions have changed substantially since the original submission will it undertake a reevaluation of the million project I didnt like the tone of the let ter explained Mayor Miller The province is asking for addi tional information but we do not have any new information Mayor Miller said the water problem in Glen Williams has been ongoing for some time now and it is a very serious one He explained people are suffering because of the lack of water and contractors are reluctant to build in Glen Williams until the situa tion is resolved Also concerned about the water situation in Glen Williams is North Noel He said the situation seems more hopeful now than before because at least the Ministry is planning to provide funds if conditions are met It the Glen Williams water project remains one of my top priorities said the MPP I wrote Premier Bob earlier this year stating this was one pro ject I would tike to have done in my riding Mr said he will meet with the Minister of Environment within the next few weeks to make sure if money becomes available the Glen
