that a winner will emerge from this most recent heavyweight bout between Canada Post and the Cana dian Union of Postal Workers it would in turn be offered that this particular eternal optimist was dreaming in technicolor The acrimony that exists between these two battling factions is so palpable it reeks of self serving decay Damn the issues damn the workers damn the seniors damn small businesses barely able to keep afloat damn the unemployed damn the injured worker and damn the single parents who need support money to feed their youngsters Lets just make sure the other side doesnt get a leg up on us This seems to be the philosophy adopted both by Canada Post and CUPW With such a scenario in place there can be no win ners When the postal strike is settled you can be guaranteed both combatants will claim victory Pyr rhic victory at best was the king of who defeated the Romans in a battle in 279 C The victory was won at such a loss of life for the troops of Pyrrhus he was unable to properly protect his kingdom from other threats and became a footnote in history The postal strike can be viewed with the same jaun diced eye although hopefully neither side will be recognized historically There is a solution at hand and one we are sure Cana dians would heartily endorse Privatize mail delivery in Canada Put the postal ser vice on the auction block for the highest bidder Competing courier services long ago realized that it is service not excuses that count in terms of customer satisfaction Why cant the same thing apply to the mail system in Canada Join a private mail delivery service Your return ad dress would be their headquarters complex and that particular company would in turn deliver the mail to you It is anoption that Canadians should think about Community Forum Are restrictions needed on young drivers Ted Vonzuben Tern Yes I believe that restrictions are needed Young drivers are in experienced and with this area growing all the time restrictions are needed now more than ever I think they are a good idea Elizabeth Meyer Frin I think that the minimum age for drivers should be raised to 17 or 18 I realize this would be hard on young people but there are just too many accidents happening Charles Carpepter Acton Restrictions are needed on young drivers because too many of them are getting injured A lot of them think they own the road as soon as they get their license and theyre really not qualified to handle all possible driving tions BrigUte Acton Yes restrictions are needed on young drivers because many of them are not very responsible With the incidents that have happened in Burlington and Milton its clear that many young drivers tend to show off Peoples Forum Rising tax rate abhorred Dear Editor To the Mayor and Councillors of Hills I would like to make my view and many other people s view clear about out situation of rising taxes think it is terrible how every year taxes are raised so much 1 have lived here for 10 years and in those few years my taxes have been raised I find it unacceptable and very disturbing You now want to raise our taxes again m 1992 Everyone whom I have talked to has agreed with my opinion A fans appreciation Dear Editor I would like to express my ap preciation and thanks to the very dedicated coaches of Georgetown Baseball especially Ball Squirt Because of the great amount of time and energy you have given the youngsters and the adults had a wonderful summer of baseball Thank you very much An interested grandmother Hewitt no hero Dear Editor The headline on the front page of the Herald on August was a real eye catcher It made Joe Hewitt look like the Bo Derek of the local and regional council where in effect on further reading he has the worst atten dance record This does not surprise us as we have noticed a marked lack of in terest on his part in the concerns and opinions of the public If al tending every single council meeting means absolutely nothing to him as he states no wonder he is so far out of touch with his constituents views which are expressed at those meetings Sincerely Hickory Falls Ratepayers Association and are also worried about taxes being raised higher Soon people will not be able to afford your taxes and be forced to sell their homes and that would harm the community The high taxes are also going to keep people from moving into our community again harming it I hope that this will help you realize how upset the people are with the constant rising taxes and take it into consideration before you raise our taxes again I would like to See our tax money handled more respon I hope that you will take some action against rising taxes If not I m sure like myself many other people will rise up and state their opinions Sincerely Edith Regent Acton Postal strike comments Dear Editor The Posties ore on again With the government watching powerless the country gently falls apart The postal workers strike raises some very basic questions which transcend this specific labour dispute First of all there is no doubt that the postal workers have like other service the right to stnke Any attempt to limit the right to strike has been shown to be futile and counterproductive Without the right to strike we would never have achieved our present system of social services and labour would be powerless The demands of the postal workers raise however several questions First of all the demand for higher wages while quite en fails to realize that a wage increase without a cor responding increase in produc is meaningless The postal workers rightly complain of ing lost purchasing power during the past three years With a new wage increase they will lose even more Wage increases without productivity Increases equal in eg monopoly money It is only right that labour should share in higher corporate profits but only if such profits do exist in terms of real money not simply numbers This by the way applies to all wage in creases The demand for job security demonstrates how out of touch with reality are many politicians and union leaders are In today world of rapid technological and market changes any attempt to guarantee job security ends with one result the employer bankruptcy This has been demonstrated ad nauseum in Europe Job security is for bet ter or worse a thing of the past Change is the overriding force of our times To force an employer to guarantee jobs is condemning all to inefficiency losses and even tually unemployment The demand for more jobs is a particularly interesting one as it implies that Labor wishes to dictate management policies Actually there is nothing wrong in having Labor at the Board of Directors table Labor today is as knowledgeable and qualified to make decisions as Capital and Management In Germany Labor docs share the board rooms with the other parties and the German economy is doing rather well But then Labor should also share in the conse quence of decision making To from the outside for more jobs is silly To ask for seats on the Board eg to ask for sharing in the management of the is sensible and responsi blc The postal workers should use their considerable muscle to ad vance the cause of Labor and of Canada by suggesting new fron tiers To stick to obsolete demands damages only the cause of the postal workers but Canada at large Carlo Testa
