write a weekly column in the Wednesday edition of the paper Hopefully this will be an op portunity for us to recognize the many good things that are hap pening at our school and to en courage your continued involve ment and support We are off to a very busy start this year with students and 110 teaching secretarial custodial and support staff As the only high school in town with a proud tradition of 104 years we are keenly aware of our mandate to serve the young peo ple of our community SCHOOL IS A COMPLEX COMMUNITY In many respects we are a community within a community Our school is organized into teaching departments each with their own Department Head teaching staff curriculum and budget The Heads meet once a week to discuss and coordinate schoolwide matters We believe that learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom We offer over 200 courses from grades 9 to OAC at the general advanced and in some cases enriched levels of difficulty In the fall term will Ik competing in cross country fool- ball and volleyball and girls basketball and field hockey in over 150 students and 21 coaches Last Friday had a chance to learn more about our very extensive program through our Club and Team Day displays in the during our three lunch periods SCHOOL DANCES One of the valuable services out Student Council provides is the sponsoring of nine school dances during the year Students sell numbered tickets per Guests from other schools must be signed a host Students are aware that dances are an extension of the school and thai responsible behavior is expected Students who smoke at dances arc violating Board policy and are dealt with accordingly Students believed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs are liable to a threeday suspen sion criminal charges by the police officers on duty and loss of future dance privileges I am pleased to say that our Rebel Welcome Dance last Fri day night was sold out and that there were no incidents of smok ing or substance abuse We are very proud of the way our students and their friends had an enjoyable and safe time SPECIAL SUPPORT FOB STUDENTS The staff and senior students are sensitive to the transitions our 250 grade students are going through In an effort to ease some of the anxiety our senior students hosted a special Grade Welcome Tour on Sept 3 the day before school started Senior students are also involv ed in a Mentor Program with grade nines They meet every other Friday with their group of students under the supervision of interested staff A variety ot discussion issues has been plann ed to fit into the life of the school Last Friday students discussed the importance of appropriate hall behavior good cafeteria habits and how to have safe troublefree fun at dances We are also planning to have a special early Grade 9 Report Card It is a checkoff format by subject area designed to give parents an understanding of how their daughters and sons have done in the first month of high school The Reports will be sent home with the students on Oct Parents are to sign the reports and return them through the students by Oct 8 Parents of Grade 9 students are also reminded of Grade Parents Night on Thursda tomorrow Coffee will be available in the cafeteria at with a special assembly at 7 Parents will then follow their students timetables gelling a chance to meet the teachers and learn more about the courses their sons and daughters are semester SPECIAL FOR SENIOR STUDENTS On Wednesday September 11 over 150 students in their graduating attended a special workshop conducted teachers were in formation on time management stress management note taking and presentation skills A Senior Newsletter is also printed every week to inform students about University and College matters Newsletters are posted in all senior classrooms and extra copies are available through the Guidance office FOR PARENTS Barbara a noted speaker on raising your teenager will be speaking on Discipline Kids Are Worth It Her address will take place at White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville Nov I4at730pm Admission is free but you must request tickets by Nov 1 If you are interested you may pick up a registration form at the school or call Anne Day at 8781240 Daycare will be provided for children aged 11 and under You are also invited to join our Parents Advisory Council which meets the last Friday of every month in the library from 930 am toll30am The purpose of the sessions is to meet school staff to learn about upcoming events and to talk to the schools administration about sports clubs dances and contests have already begun to involve all the students in extra auricular activities We cannot forget that classes have also resumed There are many great courses and they are all very challenging This is going to be a wonderful year and there are a couple of things that should be brought to your attention Student activities have begun in full force and these are just some of the events that will be happening this year The Student Athletic Associa tion A is organizing many things this year Intramural sports should be starting in a cou ple of weeks students can sign up lo play sports the turkey shoot 21 beach volleyball badminton floor hockey and more These ac tivities will be organized on lunch hours and will be scheduled throughout the school year In addition to these activities the SAA will also be organizing Spirit Assemblies where awards and special news about the school teams will be brought forth by students and it gives the student body a chance to get together and show their spirit The Year End Athletic Banquet is also organized by the SAA and this is a semiformal event where students are recognized for their athletic achievements throughout the school year Other sports news The Senior Girls Basketball team has also begun their season and they will be playing several tour naments their first one will be against Bishop Redding this Saturday Senior Boys Volleyball has also begun Student Council is also keeping busy and they need grade nine representatives to be elected Grade nines are really getting a lot of special attention so they feel comfortable and welcomed at Georgetown High There is a peer tutoring program where senior students help the juniors with any difficulties they may be having their classes and a special orientation program has also been set up where seniors do special activities with grade nines to help them feel more com fortable in their new environ ment This year the Drama Club will also be focusing on grade nine and students They will be lear ning how to work in groups how to express oneself and basically selfconfidence The students will be learning basic dramatic skills like tableau mime and role playing The club will also be having guest speakers and at the end of semester one they will be presen ting a play to the rest of the school Who are the Socially Observant Students Also known as the Club If you are not aware of what is going on in the world and would like to know this is where you should be This group of students talk about current issues going on all over the world Their goal is to promote social and political awareness throughout the school and the community On the more natural and wild side of life The Outers Club is a club that anyone can be a part of They go on canoe trips and biking trips They go snowshoeing and even cross country skiing and most importantly they go camp ing in fall in the spring and even on those cold winter days You can explore the wild nature in Northern Ontario and have lots of fun For those who prefer to stay in doors the Chess Club has a lot to offer Learn to play or perfect your skills tour naments will be held along with- national tournaments so if you enjoy a quiet game this is the club tojoin If you know a lot of trivial things join the School Reach Team You get to meet people talk to politicians and even go on a trip to Washington C All this for answering trivia auestions Meet another bunch of crazy people The Swim Team is look ing for new members If you want to have fun stay fit and act crazy this is the place to be On a more environmental note S is an organization that talks about environmental issues They have projects aims and goals they wish to achieve For example did you know that 46 bags of garbage are produced daily in the school cafetorium That is a lot of garbage So meone should do something about By joining this club you too can become more aware of our en vironment and even if you do not
