the HERALD Wednesday September 18 1991 Seniors Two town mice enjoy their summer vacation By GEORGE and FLORENCE BAKER Usually when one reads about a holiday the writer has taken they speak of far away exotic places Not so in this case This is the tale of two town mice who spent their vacation outside the Metropolis of Mount Forest This did not take place at a scenic northern lake not a sea side resort hotel with all the toys This was spent on acres of land partially covered by two huge gardens Guarding this property is a big Golden Retriever two barn cats and three horses That is country Truth is our daughter wanted a week away from picking freez ing and preserving beans corn tomatoes etc This was followed closely by a bumper crop of raspberries Then there was the canng for six beehives inhabited by what must be the most industrious bees on Gods green earth Better than 600 lbs of honey No wonder those little rascals can be a little The Donut Shop They serve wonderful coffee and good fattening doughnuts All in all it was a happy week It took us back to when we were kids returning to school September Remember we were always asked to write on What I Did On My Vacation It was nice on the shorttempered side at times As for Jessie the retriever she is queen of all she surveys She starts her day off quite early in the morning by running down to the horses giving them a blast and telling them she is around She then ignores them for the rest of the day This is followed by a complete round of the premises and check on the neighbors If there is no recognition there no pat on the heat a sock or towel etc is earned off Her attention then is centred on groundhog holes No one has told her they may have six bolt holes so she sits for hours staring and staring Now as to the socalled barn cats The two of them are on du ty only after dark when they have to be forcibly ejected from the house having enjoyed the day sleeping on the waterbed Successful bake sale The Georgetown and District Seniors Association held a very successful Bake Sale at the Fall Fair On behalf of the G D S A the Fundraising Committee Chairperson Seina Van Hoekelen would like to thank all who participated The Sons of Scotland for the use of the booth The Royal Bank for their con tnbutions the Telephone Com for all the hours they spent on the phone requesting baking for the bakers who answered the call the crews who stood in the heat and sold all the baking and those who put up the booth and helped to clean up after A Raffle was also held and the winning tickets were drawn on Sunday afternoon 1st Prize a Panasonic radio was won by Mar Tutty no 2nd Prize a quilt was on by B Newman no 285 3rd Prize cosmetics was won by Keller no 395 To those who took care of the raffle and said a horse has the brain of a walnut Some walnut Those three beautiful mares belong to a fnend of our daughters who pastures them on the back lot Those horses we are sure can tell the time Around 30 m they are nowhere in sight However at there they are standing at the fence three pairs of eyes wat ching and waiting It s feed time If they see no aclton at the house and no one appears to be heading their way there is a great deal of assorted sounds such as blowing snorting and stamping I should perhaps mention that our luggage included ing jars recipes and artists sup plies These were to be priorities to fill our days Im afraid these priorities dropped down low on our list of things to see and do Well one can always blame this procrastination on our age Be that as it may we decided there was always tomorrow However after spending many enjoyable hours visiting with friends who came up from Georgetown and with friends who have moved to that area we realized that row was creeping up on us Goodness we hadnt even taken a tour of the surrounding country with all the quaint little towns Some of these we had never heard about This just had to be included in our tomorrow What a delightful day we had on our trip around the Bruce and area All the real biggies like Carlsruhe and Chepstow We saw them all By the way if you are travelling through Walkerton try to stop at THE CORPORATION OF
