the HERALD Wednesday October 1991 PageaB Seniors Updating Seniors Association business By ROSS BETHEL Herald Special At the last Board meeting of your Association communication to the membership was a prin cipal topic Not yet having the facilities to produce and distribute a periodic newsletter what better means than through the medium of the Heralds Seniors for the Future The Board and the Executive Committee together with input from the Standing Committees will at tempt a monthly summary up date of Association business We would appreciate reader and member response to this effort The last news distribution was in July when all members of record received a copy of the 1991 Annual Report together with a commentary on and activity in the Association This made reference to the problems of maintaining a record of members good standing and appealed to current members to voluntarily renew as they see fit on their anniversary date We need this cooperation more than ever since all efforts to obtain an updated listing of Seniors years and older In the Georgetown district have failed Under recent legislation lion and issuance of such a list is considered an invasion of privacy Don t we wish that was the only personal invasion we suffer in today s society It does mean we have no viable means of contacting fellow seniors who are not yet members However our total member count still hovers around the number What has been happening the summer months The big news has to be the Blue Springs Halton Region Golf Day ed by Peter Pomeroy and members of his staff You will remember as mentioned in the July newsletter that at our March Community Information Meeting Mr Pomeroy committed his annual tournament effort to the Seniors Associations of Georgetown and of Acton He was not only as good as his word he was better than his word During the planning and preparation pro cess he held periodic progress meetings at 30 in the mom ingt with the Associations Ex ecutives where he spoke of pro ceeds in the five to seven thou sand dollar range Just great Can you imagine the almost dumbfounded delight when at the tournament dinner at Jack Tan Table a cheque was presented jointly to Association heads and Gerald Renin e for To try to list everyone who assisted and contributed to the days success would surely mean missing someone But thanks must be most sincerely given to Peter who I believe was as delighted as we with the days success to the staff members in the Region offices and to the professional people of the Blue Springs Golf Club Particularly from a financial and support effort to the 6 cor Special Events Sponsors and to the 38 corporate and business sponsors From our Seniors Associations a good deal of work and fun was con tnbuted by the executive groups and by the 10 members each from Acton and from Georgetown in eluding Georgetown Kinsmen who for the day were the gophers the hole in one monitors ticket sellers registrant assistants Behind us now is the Georgetown Fall Fair You will know from an earlier report that it was again a success for the Seniors Bake Sale and Raffle in asmuch as the Fund Raising Committees efforts put another thousand dollars into the treasury Several times it ap peared the yellow jackets were competing with the customers for the scrumptious baked goods But dauntless and wrap to the rescue Also aiding our financial pic ture were members who turned their Food Market sales slips over to Sienna Van Hoekelen s committee This resulted in store owner Bob Creasy presenting to Sienna their redemption value as a che que for Our thanks to Mr Creasy As well Bob has been generous of his time to our seniors group and has attended several of our Board and Ex Committee meetings representing the Georgetown Kinsmen who are displaying a continuing interest as to how they may help our Association objec As has been the subject of a previous information piece ac is being directed towards a temporary facility for a seniors recreation centre It has become even more evident this is the reasonable path to pursue for the short term During the summer months the Building and Plann Committee together with the Executive Committee became a task force to actively pursue this project It has not been an easy task since of course the ideal location does not exist in terms of facilities accommodation of pro grams and cost Fully 12 loca including commecial pro perties halls and vacant buildings were investigated in depth and gradually narrowed down to two possibilities One has been selected as offer ing the best possibility though again not ideal and discussions have been opened but with no conclusions as yet Through the Joint Committee with the Town Council a proposal has been made which we have confidence will receive serious attention and consideration It is however a slow and somewhat laborious procedure to put in place the necessary resolutions and by laws to satisfy municipal and pro vincial funding and participation We have put a hoped for date of September to see a tern porary facility operative We will certainly keep updates coming as we are able and as events develop BE A PART LD SARY Be a part of The Heralds Anniversary Edition Cookbook Submit your favourite recipes today you could win part of in cash Remember plainly or type doublespaced on one side of
