agiaat thai thill not llabla for out an oil In adtaftlaa- In mount paid In apaca or portion In Development issue must be addressed in municipal elections To borrow quite literally from the Bard To develop or not to develop that is the question It is a question that is uppermost not only in the minds of Halton Hills taxpayers but also in the minds of those vying for office in the upcoming Nov 12 municipal elections It is a pricklypear of a question that at this point in time will no doubt be left dangling on the tree because of the hovering local elections Such should not be the case for either of the afore mentioned obviously concerned parties A proposed new larger than Niagara Fallswill soon take root just to fte north of Brampton and its proximity to Hills begs concern According to reports this embryonic community to be called SpnngdalewiU boast a population of 70000 with af fordable housmg and all the amenities a true community of fers including a hospital policing and a fire department Information received also indicates that developers will be paying the bills so no financial burden will be shouldered by area taxpayers a community will indeed threaten Hills in terms of lost busmess revenue not to mention the loss of base taxpayer revenue when potential new residents reject Halton Hills in favor of a community closer to Metropolitan Toronto with facilities and developments more geared to the 1990s than the past The development question should be an issue in our municipal elections Hopefullyit will be an issue addressed realistically rather than in wistful anachronistic terms Community Forum Will new proposals help unite Canada MAIER Georgetown The proposals will unite Canada if the government just listens to the people Canada is for francophons and There shouldn t be a distinct society JOANNE CLOSE- Georgetown The proposals will keep Canada united Quebec seems to have sof since the Lake ordeal It well worth trying to solve WAYNE BARRETTGeorgetow n Unfortunately no I dont believe the western provinces will accept the special status that is being asked for Quebec JOHANNE WELLMAN Georget own I have no idea whether the new proposals will unite Canada but I hope they do Peoples Forum Columnists character comments queried Dear Editor In response to Ben comments that the Town possesses character cannot be disputed How best to define it so that we may protect it is the challenge admittedly a difficult one The underlying character of a town is a complex mix of many physical features and underlying moral qualities Over oneand a half centuries our Town s character has evolveti into a cer tain distinctiveness or in dividuality Our character has in fact been continually molded by those who have chosen to live here tin til now though the change has occurred slowly possibly because of our modest population Candidates call Dear Editor To add my support for letter of Roger Stopfoid recently publish We are at a point of opportunity which comes only once in three years We have responsibility to elect the best wc can get to take charge to protect our interests our money and our community Looking back over the last few years gives an insight to the methods and capabilities of those we have elected in the past I believe we can improve in our There is clearly a need for can retired or otherwise with a strong sense of business logic insight and experience Some of this type are now com mitted Hopefully more with these credentials will join us We need you I for one am fed up with costs appearance of such things as public transportation which many of us in our later years badly need and a continual stream of studies referrals and delayed decisions Thank you Lew Ward Georgetown growth Those who do not live here will undoubtedly point to the mix of architectural styles the visual landscape including our hills valleys streams and treelined streets and of course Main Street itself which still bears a striking resemblance to the way it looked quite a long time ago We are after all still a largely rural community That so much of this remains today is quite remarkable con sidenng what has happened to our neighbours close by For those who do live here not to be overlooked are the ble qualities that make our com such a great place to raise families The friendliness and of the people how we respond to the needs of our fellow citizens and the respect we show for others are all reflected in our Towns character Would it be quite the same Town without the principles con tributions and actions of the par people who have chosen to live here and how important is character in attracting new residents in the future To those of us who are com munity representatives on the Urban Area Study Advisory Com working to protect all of the things cumulatively referred to as character is apparently of considerable importance After all with the addition of 20000 or so more people over the next 20 years this might be our only opportunity to ensure that our Towns character is not modified beyond recognition Ashley Georgetown Ontario People do care To the Editor I would like to take this op portunity to
