selected as first Ontario Boxing Commissioner John Devison of Saskatoon Sask has been selected as the first Safety Commissioner for Amateur Boxing in Ontario Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation Peter North made the announcement Oct 15 in conjunction with the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and Boxing Ontario currently the Technical Director for the Saskatchewan Amateur Boxing Association will report to the three- person volunteer boxing commission chaired by Jenny Reid of Kingston The commis sion also includes Terence Mackenzie of Toronto and Bill of Ms Reid a Kingston lawyer took part in the first sanctioned bout for women in Ontario while Mackenzie a former boxing champion is a doctor at Hospital in Toronto is a former Golden Gloves champion and policeman The commission members and the paid Commissioner have the support of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association Boxing On and he Ministry of Tourism and Recreation Devison will enforce the safety standards of amateur boxing in Ontario including registrations and sanctioning of events John has a wealth of experience coaching ad ministration boxing safety and his number one priority is to ensure the safety of our boxers Mr North said We re not tak ing any chances with our athletes will have the power to shut down or cancel any bout he feels is unsafe or not up to standards Mr Devison appointment is part of a Ministry plan to the safety component of amateur boxing in Ontario and ensure that safety remains an in tegral part of amateur sport fitness and recreation in Ontario The appointment came after a Ministry review of safety stan within Boxing Ontario jurisdiction is expected to begin his new posit on on Dec 2 1991 Legions track and field camps a winning tradition Onethird of the Canadian track and field athletes and all Cana dian medal winners at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles were alumni of The Royal Canadian Legion s track and field camps Legion support for track and field dates back to the early s During those early days Ontario Hydro Branch No 277 sponsored the former Canadian Olympic Training Plan The branch organized and sponsored a number of projects to finance the program including tional track meets and big band concerts The success of the program was such that the branch put for ward a resolution at the Dominion Convention in Van seeking the Legion support for the Olympic Training Plan Since then the Legion has remained a staunch supporter of amateur sport in Canada The track and field program is designed to provide training leading to competition at the level for young athletes It provides them with the op visit other parts of Canada and mix with other athletes coaches and trainers from across the country The program serves to remind participants that the Legion cares for them not only as athletes but as citizens as well Eagerly awaiting winter For the fourth year a group of local skiers is eagerly awaiting the first snow fall and looking toward to
