of Nor val will be carved in stone thanks to the efforts of the Norval Com Association For over a year the 100member association which has existed since 1975 has been striving to establish a permanent reminder indicating s role in the history of Township Norval was one of the first set tied communities in Esquesing said Kathy Gastle a member of the Community Association The community has con sidered erecting a plaque for a long time but no one ever took the initiative That s when the sprang into action and began to cover the costs of creating a plaque Thanks to community support and several private donations the association raised the needed Kathy Gastle member of the ty Assoc at on and Dorothy McLean curator of the History book for the Nor val Women Institute sit on the rock that w record s history of ages past The Nerval Community Association has created a plaque highlighting the history of the community and it will be bolted onto this located at Hwy 7 and Noble A special ceremony will be held at 30 p m to unveil the plaque and to commemorate the Women s Institutes birthday Herald Photo to bronze a summary of the history of the town onto a plaque which will be bolted to a stone boulder at Hwy and Noble this Sunday at 2 m The plaque itself will highlight the man who first settled in the area a Loyalist named Alexander how the land for the town was purchased from a Missisauga Indian Tribe in 1818 how by 1950 the town had a woollen mill saw mill hotels bakery har shop carnage works cooper shop brass foundry bakery general store and three churches It will also reveal the town first road was made of planks and ap propriately named the Plank Rd running from Toronto to Guelph Ms Gastle the association deliberately left out the names of famous people who have lived in due to space and cost She hopes someday a plaque listing more of Norval history will be created Along with the unveiling of the plaque the Norval Women In will celebrate their an niversary They 11 be com memorating the birthday by plan ting a maple tree at the site of the unveiling It s appropriate that the un veiling and birthday will be celebrated together since the Women s Institute has long been a keeper of history with their Tweed smuir History Books Sheridan Nurseries has also donated shrubs and Dominion seed has donated bulbs for the site The plaque is being made by Art Cast of Georgetown After the unveiling and tree planting a celebration will be held St Pauls Parish Hall where the Tweedsmuir History Books fall five will be on display Also at the hall children
