Wednesday October 23 School News the HERALD Page Rebel Report GDHS media program In focus ByHAVIATFSTA Tins week I would like to focus on the Grade 12 media program at GDHS The program in many different aspects of media television radio photography joun Not on ly are these subjects discussed but there is also a technical and handson skill that is required This year like many other years the program is getting the students involved in creating a one hour television show and the students are learning a lot about what is involved in producing a television show Grade 12 media course is a wonderful program at the high school and this year the students are involved in creating their own television show that will air on Cable in a few weeks students get one hour of air time and they are putting together trjree 20 minute shows Each directed produced and starring the students of the class The three sections they will be touching on are school news and events the new cosmetology course and few on enter tamment The students involved in this program are learning how to manage and produce a show and are learning about the technical skill required The students use portable cameras to film the show They also edit the work they have done on a professional editing machine Furthermore they also get to use the equipment at the Cable station in Acton There the students are able to use the professional cameras to film segments of their shows while others in the control room look on to make sure everything is going well They are able to use special equipment that permits them to view what is being filmed in a number of different ways and they can tell the cameramen which way to shift their cameras etc University information program ByBRYNDWIES Principal Univensty Information Night for Parents Tonight An annual event at GDHS is University Information Night for Parents This is an opportunity for you to come to hear about a variety of issues relating to your son or daughter University plans A College Information Night is held later in the year Tonight meeting from to p m in our cafetonum will look at timelines choosing the right university and sources of additional information including finances While all of our guidance counsellors work with senior students two of tbem in par ticular Mrs Worrall and Mrs ONeil are responsible for the evening In addition to tonight s event thty also produce a Senior Newsletter which provides students with updates about cam pus visits and university and col lege application guidelines In addition we have an OAC the older gr committee which looks at the pressures our graduating students are under Each year this group of teachers put on a special workshop about the survival skills senior students need to master We are also attempting to ordinate field trips and major assignments in order to help students manage their busy workload More importantly the students are able to gel the handson ex of what it is like to work in a television studio and they realize what it is like to put a show together in a few short weeks In the past two weeks students have been filming other students enrolled the new cosmetology course They have received a lot of information about the program from an interview with Mrs Dell the teacher as well as interviews with many students The first few times the media students had some problems with the cameras and the sound interference but soon they got the hang of it and they had a great time interview ing and filming everyone in the class Not only do the shows have to be filmed but scripts have to be written producers have to review the material and editors have to decide what to keep and what not to keep Other students in the class have these duties Scripts are being written for the two hosts of the show and this too involves a lot of work and it is very time consuming The producers have to alter anything that is wrong with the material on film before the editors see il and they must also choose any music they want to use on each program All the students are working very hard and they are getting a glimpse of what it is like to create a television show It is not as easy as it looks The students get a lot of handson work to do and lhe are all cooperating to make the show a success They are learning about the technical aspects of television and they are having fun doing it So stay tuned to your local channel and don miss Rebel Review produced by the Grade 12 media class A boys day out Acton youths Matthew Grey Kyle Grey and Steven Terry 5 had a day
