Wednesday October 23 1M1 the HERALD Page 1 IB Seniors Seniors glow in Fall of life By FLORENCE WILKINSON Herald Special We are just passing through the season usually considered to be Fall the time when the leaves change color and the gardens are gathered in How many people have you heard lately express their absolute delight about It seems to me that at least per cent of the people with I speak tell me how much they like this season I myself was recently enjoy the beauty and variety of col or as I motored into the city to at tend a dinner in honor of a man who has been retired for many years but whose life reminds one of the beauty of Fall It occurred to me that those same people who just love the Fair may not be so enthusiastic about matunng and growing old themselves When did it happen in society that matunng into and growing was considered a wonderful thing for plants yet the same time for humans was less than desirable even could beabhorenf It is true that much advertising and promotion has been done over the last decade or two to per human beings that old does not have to be bad Even the name of a seniors TV program which can be seen regularly reminds us of this It is called The Best Is Yet To Come Even so among many there is still real fear of the day when work responsibilities will cease and others will take over the power decisions and the respon for the future As seniors we can be grateful to those who are making a real fort to show that aging has its own responsibilities I have lived in a society where the cultural knowledge and responsibility was not passed on until after the ly was raised and so by the time that one had practised a bit he or she was entering the aging years Could we as these people did take a lesson from the leaves The rules of the universe usually apply fairly consistently across all areas of life I am sure that we can learn from the leaves that are not fed and watered during their prime and drop off prematurely or only go brown They can tell us as many educators are now doing how important it is for we humans to keep ourselves fed on the things that really matter Or to look at it from the beautiful side of things perhaps the wonderful colors of Fall are just a sign of how all life human as well as plant may mature in beauty and glory so that all of life may be enriched by that beauty and made and full by the matunty which aging allows Of course there is another side to Fall the time when everything is brown windy and colder a time when it is hard to keep warm and find anything beautiful to look at Perhaps this is the part of the aging year to which humans in the past have looked for their example to how aging comes to the human race If so I guess it is time to change our style of thinking To get back to the dinner men earlier I sat beside a very interesting grad of who had served in a responsible position for the university for ten years after his retirement not even in the area in which his life work had trained him We discussed several people who had done some of their most valuable work after the age of retirement I am sure there were many of them present at the event It has to be true that humans Turner rated good on pension protest Hun Thomson News Si r OTTAWA The National Citizens Coalition wants to get angry with their members of Parliament and ihe gold plated pension plan that provides many with lav benefits after just six years vice So to agitate as many citizens as possible the Torontobased lob by group has run advertisements in newspapers in every province telling readers to call their MPs and let them know just where they stand on the subject The ads list all 295 MPs and their constituency office telephone numbers And to be helpful to readers the ad divides the MPs into three categories the good the bad and the bashful The good said NCC President David Somerville are those who have taken a stand and condemn the unique plan and are willing to consider reforms There are only 21 of them The bashful the great majority who didnt respond to the NCC survey or refused to take a tion on the plan are those who don t have the guts to endorse or reject the plan Somerville said The bad are those who have decided to lake the money and run They these inflated pensions They are absolutely by them Some are rogantly pleased with them hi told reporters Both Cambridge Tory Pat and Halton Peel Conser Garth Turner made the NCC s good list but Com Minister was on the hit list of bad MPs Science Minister William was listed as bashful by the organization With his years of service ly stands to make more from the plan than most MPs If he lives to he stated he could collet I more than fi million The has been campaign ing for several years to bring MPs pension plan into line with those permitted by regulations in the private sector Pension experts have told Thomson News Service the plan is tremendously generous and a disgrace It entitles MPs to pension of 75 per cent of their ear after just years in office Most Canadians must work years to collect per cent And most citizens must wait until they reach or very near that to qualify MPs can start collecting if they are ousted or retire just six years after enrolling in the plan In certain cases MPs could be collecting more than per year after age 60 The average taxpayer taking early retirement at the same age would qualify for just These people arc not princes or potentates The pension plan they ve got now is a Somerville said The timing of the campaign is deliberate Somerville explained that MPs will be forced to reflect on plan by the end of the year Technical amendments to Ihe Income Tax Act approved by Parliament last summer require all pension funds to be registered to qualigy for tax benefits If they do not register the fund Ihe ten per cent of their income MPs con tnbute will not be tax deduclible Somerville said He hopes enough people will respond to the ads to convince MPs they should bring their scheme into line with private plans Somerville is especially upset with the government s repealed call for public restraint and privatescctorbelt tightening Gag me with a spoon These people are absolute hypocrites can age like the leaves beautifully that the Fall of human life need not be a time to fear but a time to await with ex pectation I do not know when you will
