the HERALD- Wednesday November 13 Community Special guest at WI meeting By BETTY Herald Special Public Relations Reporter Mrs Grace for the Womens Institute gives us the following report of their November monthly meeting Ballmafad Womens Institute held a very busy and interesting meeting on Wednesday evening November at the home of Betty Kooperdraad The guest speaker was Jean who is nent in the Historical Society and is also a long time member of the Georgetown Rug Hooking Guild She gave a very interesting talk and demonstra tion including the history of the Guild the history of rug hooking the mechanics of the new systems and the steps that are followed in the different types and creations produced by these patient and talented artists She brought many samples of the Ballinafad News beautiful work of some Guild members It is an art far improv from the mats we remember our grandmothers making The usual opening exercises were conducted by the president Margaret The roll call was answered by eight members by naming a Beef and what you are doing aboiu it Some answers were such things as ex cessive traffic caused by one to a vehicle Another discussion arose from the waste of trees paper and pulp when so much paper is wasted by junk mail The W I members enjoyed the supper and were pleased with the work of the Club when they completed their project Rabies warning On November several dogs came in contact with a skunk in the area of Stewart and Kerr Streets in Oakvilte The skunk has since been proven to be rabid Although rabies is always pre sent in Halton it is rare for a rabid animal to be in such a built up area The public are advised to take the following precautions Keep away from wild animals and familiar pets Vaccinate cats and dogs and keep pets under control at all times If you see a wild or stray animal behaving strangely report it to your local Humane Society or Animal Shelter If you are bitten by an animal wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and apply an an tiseptic You should also report the incident to the Health Depart and to your doctor Rabies is a common fatal disease of wildlife in Ontario Often it can spread to domestic animals including cats and dogs Foxes skunks raccoons and bats are the most common carriers of rabies Rabbits squirrels and other rodents rarely get the disease Rabies is caused by a virus that is usually spread by the bite of an infected animal The virus enters damaged nerves in the wound and travels towards the brain In animals symptoms usually cur between two and eight weeks after the bite when the virus reaches the brain Symptoms are not always of the mad dog variety Animals can appear quiet frightened vicious or any combination of these moods Any unusual behaviour should therefore be presidents Grace and Margaret Jamieson The Christmas meeting has been changed to a potluck luncheon at 12 on December at the home of Helen Brown Husbands are in The delegates to the area con vention at Arthur on October 13 and were Ada Kirkwood and Market Jamieson who gave in formative reports of the two day meeting It was the Annual Area Convention which includes Halton Wellington Waterloo and Huron Counties with about 100 branches The attendance was over The theme was Climb ing Higher There were a number of workshops on such themes as Drugs Agriculture in the Classroom Reflexology Em phasis this year will be on plan ting trees and if every branch in Ontario will plant only one tree there will be more trees in Ontario member is also urged to plant one also Next years convention ADVISORY COMMITTEE Two 2 members are needed for a three year period to join four others members of the public and two councillors on this Committee The Commit tee meets up to six 6 times per year and discusses policy for the Town Ac Service ActiVan is a public transit service for handicapped residents of the Town PROPERTY STANDARDS COMMITTEE One 1 member is needed to two other members for a term ending December The Committee meets to hear appeals of property owners from Orders to Comply issued by Property Standards Officers Applicants should be residents of the Town who are not Town employees SAFETY COUNCIL Two members who are residents of Hills are needed to sit on this region wide committee until December 1994 The Council deals with traffic water and family safety matters at monthly meetings LOCAL ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE A A Four members ore needed to serve on this Committee for three 3 year terms The Committee Council on the designation of buildings of historic and architectural interest under the Ontario Heritage Act HOUSING AUTHORITY One I appointee is required for nomination to sit on this provincial body for a two three year term which may be
