note from GDHS On Saturday students from the stage band wind ensemble jazz band and jazz choir attended a musical workshop in Oakville at White Oaks high school They took part in various workshops led by skilled in telligent music teachers who helped them understand and learn a little more about music The jazz choir attended a workshop with Mr Gary Fischer Mr Fischer taught the students various breathing techniques how to control their breathing where air should be taken in from and led a few warm up exercises He also show ed students various techniques in mouth shape he made students sing vowels and consonants so they would feel and hear the of how the shape of the mouth can alter the sound He taught the students a great deal As Lisa Sheppard said I liked it a lot I think all the students ap preciated what Mr Fischer had to offer in a very short time After the workshops students had the opportunity to practice and polish their performances in designated practice rooms The jazz choir normally consisting of about 15 students only had six singers available for this event so you can imagine their anxiety before their per formance Nevertheless they took time to practice together and finally they sang Rio de and Teach Me To Sw ing At the end they were given special pointers on how to prove their singing techniques Then they took parts of their music and following the tion of the teacher tried to prove the sound and to project more feeling so that future au diences would be blown away Band members did equally well although some students were not happy with their per formance Students were very pleased with the wind ensemble and less pleased with the stage band But not everything is perfect The important part was that students were able to per form for other students and they got special pointers from other teachers All the students learned something new about music They met professional musicians and had time to listen to each other sing and enjoy the different types of music that was presented to them Special thanks go out to Mrs Wallace and Mr Quinnlin who escorted the students to Oakville Until next time happy singing SERVICES LT FOR ALL YOUR
