Wednesday November the HERALD Page Arts and Ideas We all have special interests By the time this column gets the election will be over thank God and things will con as before with a ftw cosmetic changes maybe htrc and there but nothing basic wilt have changed Of this can sure During the election camp all the unex slogans of our great ilist system got ban died about again I don t know my informed person who still uses these slogans but during the past weeks they ill popped up again Development ing Growth were reverently quoted without qualification as if these ire gospels in stone opposed to the un qualified use of these concepts was accused of acting in his or her interest only Because of this the election campaign was largely an exchange of stupidities and quickly became boring Not all of us are stupid The fact is we all act in our own interest Everyone of us is his or her own special interest group Beware of the person who promises to only have interest in mind The car dealer wants to sell as many cars as possible The developer wants to squeeze every possible dollar from the property he builds on The chemical manufacturer wants you to use a lot of poison on your lawn the quarry owner wants to enlarge his quarry onto your property if he can manage The road builder wants to widen every road The farmer wants to sell his farm for a million bucks Everybody wants to live in a quiet neighborhood The politi cian wants to be reelected One could go on forever To be reelected is often the on motive of the politician To have power or what is more often the case to have the illusion of power acts like a drug on the Ideas and The Arts by John Sommer in The const op port unities that come with the job ire it boosts to the ego politicians get a lot of flack but th it is p of the job description isn t it Ben was right when he ended his column a week ago with the old saying If you can t st the heat get out of the kitchen As I stated above hac all ur own interests in mind That is understood and should at no time be made to look like a crime However we also know that unfettered self interest leads to chaos We have learned a long time ago that in a community we can rarely have it all our way that we have to compromise with other people s interests and find a way we can ill live with A way that gives us not only short term riches and fun but long term sanity and health That is the root of democracy To attack people who want to take part in the democratic pro cess amounts to cutting these roots To demand that people who run for office must have a plan amounts to cutting these roots What plan do you have in mind A five year to stamp out crime maybe A 10year plan to get all cars off the road A 20 year plan to make everybody happy except the pesky people who always oppose everything Venture Fund grants open to artists The Ontario Arts Council s Department of Developmental Ventures released the guidelines for application to the Venture Fund The don need charismatic leaders to show us the wa We have to find the way ourselves And one way to do is to the same people into office ind again New brooms sweep v ell politician must not be a in or in politician must be a common sense person with desire to im prove his or hen mind and to learn new things to confront new ideas through a constant dialogue with tht volers What makes them feel they are removed from us the elected the moment they got where they wanted to be Why these ridiculous faced appan lions around the council tible Forget about immediately runn for the next election Do your best for the next three years Work with us together Our cynicism about politicians is reinforced by your secretive behavior You look as if you just made a deal you want to hide from us yet I am sure tfiat
