forced to quit school in order to care for their can now return to school and continue their education The Halton Region Public Board of Education in with Region the province and localday care centres has recently established Teen Education and Motherhood TEAM programs in Georgetown and Acton The program services pregnant teens or young mothers working towards attaining high school credits said Ann Day TEAM Supervisor during an interview Thursday In Hills young mothers attend the TEAM program operated out of Maple Nursery School in Georgetown while 10 other young mothers attend a similar program in Acton at the Ac ton ParentChild Resource Centre Daycare workers care for the children while the mothers study under the supervision of a teacher and a program coordinator Describing the program as unique Ms Day said since starting TEAM in Burlington five years ago as a pilot project some of the past participants have gone on to college to study nursing business early childhood education and auto mechanics Before starting the program in Georgetown and Acton 30 local young mothers had been placed on a waiting list to get into the The program is free for par ticipants The cost is split between the board of education and the and the province The Region is responible for finding daycare cen tres that will host the TEAM program Alma Sargent the programs Georgetown Supervisor said the participants in her program are all working towards finishing their Grade diploma We have a pretty young group so most are getting the basics such as math and English so they can go back to high school once their children are ready for kin dergarten said Ms Sargent Most of the participants are 16- yearsold or older although in the past some have been as young as 14 said Ms Day The younger par ticipants are encouraged to even tually reenter high school It would take them too long to complete their high school education if they only participated in the TEAM program said Ms Participants use indpendent lear ning material similar to that used for correspondence courses to ac commodate the mothers schedules During the initial pilot program participants studied in a classroom this method proved unsuccessful said Ms Day Too often the young mothers had to stay at home because the baby was sick or because of another babyrelated problem she said Blood donor clinic collects 359 units Red Cross officials reported donors attended the Blood Clinic Monday and donated 359 units of blood This clinic was sponsored by the Lions Club their help with distribution of posters setting up clinic
