silence was observed for these 3 distinguished ladies Mrs Mary presented Jane with her Life Membership Pin Three ladies were presented with Cer for years of work with Terra Women s Institute Those were Eleanor Eldred Anderson and Marg McKane Mrs Florence Christie gave the courtesies thanking the An niversary Committee Eleanor Anderson and Enid McBride A social hour was enjoyed by everyone in Award is presented by Federated Women Institutes of Canada to a man who most exemplifies those qualities of Lee which led to the funding of the Women s Institute an which spread across Canada and grew to include millions of women worldwide In 1897 Erland Lee heard an ad dress by Adelaide and he invited her to speak to the local Farmers Institute Ladies Night As usual a suggestion like this was not greeted with per cent approval However Lee was the President and also active in agricultural and govern ment circles throughout the area women and one man Lee attended the first meeting and Lee s wife Janet wrote the first Constitution of the very first Women Institute on the Lee dining room table In a day when women were without a public voice and with limited access to scientific knowledge Erland Lee lent them his voice his position his con tacts and his influence Throughout the years many men have assistec the Women s Institutes to become the force they are in the communities throughout Canada Federated Women s Institutes of Canada recognized this fact and this year at their convention in Victoria they presented the very first Lee Award to the Honourable Bill Minister of Agriculture Ontano has been honored to have two recipients this year Reg Whitty a reporter for the Kingston Whig Standard was for many years a great supporter and reporter of the Women s In stitute meetings in
