sportation Policy and two hours of debate Board of Education trustees passed the motion at their regular meeting Thursday night However trustees only voted to pass the motion leaving the im plementation of recommendations in the policy subject to budget ap proval This means the onus of deciding whether or not to increase bus tran sportation service will be left to the new school board Georgetown school trustee Dick Howitt voted in favor of the motion but nowretired Acton trustee Arlene Bruce voted against it At Thursday nights meeting she told the board if we deal with this tonight the new trustees will only deal with the costissue of bus tran sportation The new trustees wont be forced to deal with this issue in- depth before they make a budget decision She told trustees it would serve the public better if the new board had a full understanding of the issue Other trustees agreed with Ms Bruce trustee put forth a motion to post pone dealing with the tran sportation policy until Jan It did not pass The boardroom was packed with taxpayers awaiting the boards decision on the issue Speakers from three delegations urged the board to pass the motion The delegations representing Glen Abbey Parents Concerned About Busing the Oakwood Parent- Teacher Association and Munns School Concerned Parents all want reductions made in the tran sportation distance eligibility to reduce the distance children have Saying goodbye As Wednesday was the last Regional Council meeting before the new Regional Council is inaugurated into office for a three- year term commencing Dec Regional Chairman Peter Pomeroy took some time to recognize outgoing councillors Chairman presented all outgoing Regional councillors in cluding Hills Regional Coun cillor Joe Hewitt with a Region Coat of Arms engraved ring Chairman thanked Mr Hewitt on behalf of himself and Regional staff for the service he has given to and he wished Mr Hewitt every success in the future He also added I know there is a political career in the future for Mr Hewitt Other outgoing Regional Coun cillors included Oakville Regional Councillors John Graham and Janet Mitchell and Burlington Regional Councillors Mayor Bird Rob Forbes and Pat Mclaughlin Campaign endorsed Regional Council voted Wednesday to endorse a national campaign calling on men to speak out in to mens violence against women The campaign entitled the White Ribbon Campaign is being spearheaded by Torontobased group Mens Network for Change Speaking in support of the cam paign Regional Chairman Peter Pomeroy said he plans to focus his volunteer work in l92on promoting this issue As part of the campaign men across the country are being requested to hang a while ribbon from their house car or al their workplace and to wear a white rib bon or armband from Dec marking anniversary week the Montreal Massacre According to a press release the white ribbon symbolizes a call for men lo lay down their arms in the women to walk to school The new board of trustees will have to decide if reducing the distance eligibility is worth the cost to taxpayers In the passed motion there are five recommendations for changing bus transportation eligibility The one rejecting the biggest changereducing distance eligibility for Kindergarten to 13 students- would cost the board while the alternative of keeping distance eligibilities the same would cost the board nothing Besides passing the tran sportation motion trustees also passed a recommendation to review opening and closing times of schools to complement school busing services A recommendation approving the annual appointment of four trustees one each from Burlington Hills Milton and to a Transportation Appeals Com mittee was also passed Coat cleaning project St Albans Anglican Church and Cleaners of Georgetown participated In a coat giveaway for the rieedy Saturday at the church The coats were collected by volunteers of the church and cleaned at Barragers Cleaners
