Wednesday December the HERALD Council Briefs Election workers upset over pay The Town of Hills pays the lowest wages in for its poll clerks and deputy returning of ficers so of these employees came to Council Monday to ask for more money Marlene Jehu of Terra Cotta represented the workers and said she put in hours as a deputy returning officer during Novembers municipal election but was only paid When you work that out it comes to per hour which is less than minimum wage she said She informed that Brampton and both pay to and for poll clerks while Oakville pays for and for poll clerks We were only paid and we feel we should be supplemented she said Town Clerk Janet said Hills also pays the lowest wages in with Milton paying for DROs and 95 for poll clerks She explained that if Council were to supplement the employees to the Milton level it would cost the Town an additional Councillor Rob Heaton then made a motion to top up their wages however it was defeated Coun Anne voted against the motion saying if we put out an ad for employees and it states the wage and they came back later saying they want more thats ridiculous Coun Pam Johnston agreed saying we shouldnt set a precedent by raising wages after the fact In the end it was decided the 12 employees would not be plemented but the wages for municipal DROi and poll clerks would be reviewed before the next election Nobody to blame I danced the tune and I want to know who played the fiddle because Im taking off my dancing shoes is how Derrick Williams of Georgetown told local councillors Monday he was upset with a industrial 3We want to reassess all lands designated industrial and to ensure that ample buffering sound proofing and other necessary steps are put in place through a special zone category to minimize the in compatibility between industrial and residential neighbors In response councillors assured Mr his concerns would be addressed in a staff report expected to be completed in January Traffic problems reviewed Monday to review no parking and no stop ping areas in Acton in response to a complaint from an Acton resident John of Acton wrote Council saying it was dangerous for him and other residents driving on Church St and Highway 25 in Acton because parked cars block a drivers view of oncoming cars When we try to exit from St heading east at this intersection it is extremely difficult to see the traffic Mr Deaken stated in his letter said its dangerous because cars park where there are No Parking signs and because Eds In and Out Variety store places a large sign on the sidewalk both of which block the view Acton Coun Gerald Rennie agreed with Mr and suggested that if No Stopping signs were posted this might alleviate the problem But Acton Norm Elliott said he didnt believe it would be ef fective and added that poor viewing is a problem at more more street corners than just Church St I think we should address the whole issue of obeying No Parking and No Stopping signs he said Council agreed and the situation will be reviewed by Town staff What to do with the money Despite concerns by one coun cillor that in funds from the Ministry of Natural Resources be designated for use in repairing roads Council agreed Monday to place the money in a fund where it could be used for any capital projects The money Council received represents a payment of 04 cents per tonne for approximately 3170000 tonnes the Ministry ex tracted from licenced pits in Halton Hills during This fee is part of the Aggregate Resources Act which enables the ministry to collect fees from licen ced quarry operators and in turn give part of this fee to the municipality where the aggregate comes from Since the money is related to gravel told Council my thinking is that trucking ruins roads and we should get com pensation for that This money should be used to repair roads on gravel truck routes Town Treasurer Ray King said there are no conditions on how the funds can be spent and recom mended that Council place the amount into general revenues to be utilized as a source of capital fun ding for such projects Council may determine as part of the annual Capital Budget This recommendation was passed by Council No taping of meetings Despite having requested ad ministration to ini estigate the feasibility of implementing an audio recording system in council chambers Council voted Monday against the installation of a system Administration estimated that an audio recording system would cost council Acton Gerald Rennie said he was opposed to spending the money on a recording system if the public wants to hear the debate of Council they can a the meeting The system have any legal value Its a iparently other councillors agret and the motion to have a system was defeated Proclamations
