the HERALD Political Forum Sunday January 5 1992 1 991 ends on a high note for MP Well the year is ending on a happy note for me actually lots the notes of 0 Canada I mentioned here a few weeks ago that a constituent had called me last May with a great idea revitalize the national anthem recording it with Canadas top singers and then do the same with our best orchestral musicians This radio disc jockey Ross Carhn infected me with his energy and enthusiasm and for eight months we have been work ing on this project along with two other great Canadians Brian I yon and Hayward My job was to go out and sell enough corporate sponsorships to finance the whole thing After months of phoning and faxing I managed to sell enough to finally get the project moving And at a news conference in Toronto Ross Brian Hayward and myself were actually able to play the music show an O Canada video and announce the project was done GIC RATE 85 Rate Subject To Change Without Notice MONEY CONCEPTS I HEARTILY ARMSTRONG I YOUR INSURANCE BROKER I UNDERSTAND PAUL C ARMSTRONG INSURANCE BROKERS LTD MILL ST Hills Ontario 8770133 Then things started to explode Newspaper stories published in Montreal and Ottawa lit up the phones of the 0 Canada which we established to pro mote the national anthem In case this sounds a tad grandiose the phone is actually sitting in Ross house and call forwarded to my office where volunteers have been coming to answer the calls People are dialing our number 5190 CANADA and ordering a of the new music Radio stations across Canada have been sent a copy and more than agreed to play the new O Canada at noon on New Years Day The response has been en thusiastic and rewarding This week we are also mailing 200 copies of both versions of the anthem to every school in Canada The postage on that mailing alone is over and all this money along with the other costs is donated This is a gift to Canada and its young peo ple for the birthday of our country Sounds corny I know But my Garth Turner range for everything from manufacturing compact discs to negotiating a television program contract But against all odds it all worked And along the way we managed to employ about musicians keep a couple of fac ones open through an entire weekend and even give gainful work to a composer I hope you have an early chance to hear the music and I hope you like it On a which broadcast seven of every 10 callers were very enthusiastic about the new anthem the other three think theres something very wrong in messing with Canada But mess we did Complete with a wailing guitar and the likes of Gino Vanelh Rita and Allanah Myles3rk singing their hearts out for Canada Letsjomthem involvement has returned to me some of that pnde and which over the last few months has been rubbed off by the ing cynicism which seems to be tearing down Canada After the press conference last week I drove home listening to the new anthem being played on the radio it was quite an ex after months of toiling away The stress level had been intense as the four of us scrambl ed to pay bills meet com mitments woo the countrys best singers into participating and HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION OF
