Herb Robinson named 92 Heritage award winner By STEVEN LeBLANC The Herald When looking back on the history of minor hockey in Georgetown one must certainly take notice of Herb Robinson and his accomplishments During the 1950s 60s and 70s Mr Robinson donated his time energy and innovation to local hockey Next month his achievements will be officially honored with the presentation of the 1992 Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council Award He first became involved in local hockey in the early 1950s when Branch Georgetown Royal Canadian Legion of which he is a member was sponsoring and organizing Saturday Morning Hockey From this beginning Mr Robin son became a founding executive of the Georgetown Junior B Beavers the Georgetown Minor Hockey Sup port Group the County Hockey League and the Milton Midget Hockey Tournament I am very happy to be chosen for this award but honestly it t a huge surprise because I was eligible for it four or five years ago said Mr Robinson Mr Robinson was nominated by many people in Georgetown in eluding Council Chairman Dave Kentner I grew with Herb s boys and many Saturday afternoons he would give up the pleasure of ching his own sons play hockey to work on stats or scheduling that how dedicated he was to minor hockey in this community ex plained Mr Mr Kentner remarks are by no means an overstatement Mr Robinson took on every involved in hockey from HERB ROBINSON scheduling and organizing statistics to arena maintenance and time keeping His average Saturday would begin at five in the morning and often run into lite evening He was also Pee Wee convenor for four years and was on the Georgetown Arena Board in the late 60s At times I considered moving his bed to the arena because he spent so much time there jokes his wife He explained that his dedication to local hockey was due largely to his three sons Kent Paul and Glen He says one of his best memories of hockey was in the mid 60s when the local midget team cap tured the Ontario championship because both Paul and Glen were on the team Glen won the scoring title that year Mr Robinson has also been named Georgetown Sports Builder of the Year and an honor award winner of the County Hockey League In his 25 years of local hockey he made several out standing contributions said award selection committee chair man Del Beaumont He was mild mannered a pleasure to work with and there is no one more deserving of the award than him Mr Beaumont s selection contemplation he came upon a long time local hockey fan who summed up Herb Robinson s involvement and dedication to
