(905) 608-9330 www.brenmar.ca Karen Brock is taking over the reins of the Oakvillegreen Conservation Association. Brock has been a board member of the non-profit, non-partisan environmental organization for two years and was elected as its new president. Brock brings 14 years of schoolyard greening at Sunningdale Public School and years of volunteering with Oakvillegreens Ground Breakers tree planting pro- gram to the position, according to a press release. A nurse by profession, Brock has an interest in enhancing the urban forest, especially in terms of the environmental benefits it provides to cleaning the air and water and providing sun protection and cooling to the community. The outgoing president, who served in that capacity for the past seven years, Liz Benneian, has become the organizations manager of public education and commu- nication. Oakvillegreen has also received a couple of grants. It received a two-year, $61,800 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The funding will allow the organi- zation to expand its environmental education programs in schools as well as offer more urban forest tours, provide speakers and put on other events to the community. In addition, Oakvillegreen has received a $10,000, one-year grant from the Earth Day Canada Community Environmental Fund for its Growing and Urban Forest Project. These grants will allow Oakvillegreen to continue, and to expand, programs that have planted more than 11,000 native trees and shrubs in Oakville since 2004, engage more volunteers and provide many more learning opportunities to the community, said Brock, in the release. Numerous curriculum-based envi- ronmental programs are available for pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12. Furthermore, Oakvillegreen can pro- vide Eco schools, especially those interested in re-naturalizing their schoolyards, with helpful resources and advice, including site visits and consultation. Principals and teachers interested in inviting Oakvillegreen to their classroom or in receiving help with naturalization projects should contact president@oakvillegreen.org.
