By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR When the Oakville Blades open the Ontario Junior Hockey League season next month, theyll be led by their fourth coach in as many years. Matt Moore is the latest to board the Blades coaching carousel after Mark Jooris left the team earlier this month to coach the league rival Markham Waxers. While Moore will technically be the Blades head coach, hell be closely assisted by Oakville general manager Carlo Coccimiglio. Coccimiglio, who coached the Blades to an appearance in the 2008 RBC Cup national tourna- ment before stepping down a year later to focus on the off-ice affairs of the club, will run team practic- es. Coccimiglio isnt concerned that another coaching change Jason Nobili followed Coccimiglio in 2009-10 before stepping down for personal reasons might dis- rupt an organization that has reached four consecutive league final and won two of them. We have a philosophy here, and its not one person who wins. Its not the coach who wins, said Coccimiglio. Its the organization that brings everybody together. Theres a lot going on behind closed doors that makes us successful. The coach is inter- changeable. They buy into our philosophy. Coccimiglio said he wont be behind the bench during games and that Moore will have the final say in lineup decisions. Moore, who has been an assistant coach with the Blades for the past three seasons, doesnt anticipate any issues with the new coaching arrangement either. Carlos a great coach and bench boss, and I can lean on him for support, Moore said. There are a lot of talented and capable minds to run the team. Its not like a house of cards where you pull one out and the whole thing falls apart. As an assistant coach, Moore was responsible for the Blades defensive corps and penalty-killing units. He assumes a lot more responsibility as head coach, but hes prepared to delegate and defer. You have to hold other people accountable, and thats why Oakville has a good orga- nization. he said. (Assistant coach) Jamie (Brock) knows whats going on with the power play, so I can look away at something else. Moore replaces Jooris, who left for Markham after he and the Blades couldnt agree on com- pensation for the upcom- ing campaign. Jooris led Oakville to the league final last season. Mark did a good job for us. We were happy with his work, but it was a team effort last year, Coccimiglio said. In Markham, Jooris will be reunited with for- mer Blades assistant general manager Chris Vanstone, who is now the Waxers GM. Brock and Vince Laise will round out the Oakville coach- ing staff this season. Brock has been an assistant coach with the Blades for the past four years, while Laise joins the staff in a skill devel- opment role. 2011/2012 Fall and Winter Indoor Registration Just because summer ends doesnt mean your soccer season has to!
