Starting Sept. 3, the Oakville company will put on Run for the Fun of It, a six-week training clinic to support people to run or walk in Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) sixth annual 5KSM Turkey Run on Oct. 10. The program will take place every Saturday at 9 a.m. leading up to the Thanksgiving run. Participants will be pro- vided support in the form of guest speakers and lectures, people to run with for encour- agement and a manual, among others, geared to prepare them for the 5 km trek. The program is designed so that theyre going to have to do some running during the week, as well as Saturday morning. They will meet here for about a half-hour or 40 min- ute lecture followed by whatever is in their program that week, said Greg McKinnon, employee at TRC. The cost of the clinic is $40 and approxi- mately half of the proceeds will go back to KSM. It makes it a bit unique in the clinic in that they are going to raise some money just by participating, said McKinnon. One of the guest speakers will be Dr. Randy Gordon who is scheduled to come in week three or four of the program, said 5KSM race director Dave OHalloran. The annual turkey run will be held at Heritage Square, and is a major fundraiser for the KSM programs that help support 5,000 of Oakvilles less fortunate. The event has grown steadily since its inception in 2006 and has become a fall favourite for both competitive and recre- ational runners. The addition of events for children makes it a great outing for fami- lies, said OHalloran in a press release. The 5k run is the main event, along with a 1k childrens fun run and a 300-metre tod- dler turkey run. There are also team catego- ries, with prizes for the top corporate, com- munity and open teams. This years goal is to raise $60,000 to fund programs that KSM offers to families, includ- ing summer camps, weekly community meals, Christmas Wonders gifting and vari- ous childrens and youth programs. The cost to register in the run is $30 until Sept. 16, and will go up $5 until Oct. 6. Registering on the day of the run will cost $40. People can reserve a spot in the clinic by calling 905 815-1952 or in person at TRC, located at 114 Lakeshore Rd. E., at the cor- ner of Lakeshore and Navy. For the 5KSM Turkey Run, people can register online at www.5ksmturkeyrun.com or by calling 905 845-7485.
