Chisholm, who later became the first Mayor of the Town of Oakville. George, one of the sons of William Chisholm, founder of Oakville, married Isabella Land, grand-daughter of the founder of Hamilton, Robert Land. He was deeply involved in public life serving as Chairman of the Board of Health and the Board of Education, President of the Mechanics Institute and the Oakville Agricultural Society and Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Battalion of Halton Volunteers and Sergeant-at- Arms for the Legislate Assembly of the Province of Canada. He served as Mayor of Oakville for eight years, Reeve of Trafalgar Township for 12 years, Member of Parliament for three years and Town Councillor for 14 years. George and Isabella lived at this house until 1857. In 1868 the house was purchased by Richard S. Wood, founder of the Oakville Oil Refinery which famously burned down in 1866, spilling thousands of gallons of kero- sene, and setting 16 Mile Creek ablaze. While living at 85 Navy St. he operated a planing mill and blind facto- ry and added a two storey addition to this property, supposedly to become a bank, although it never did. In 1903 the house was sold to Captain Maurice f Fitzgerald, captain of one o the last sailing schooners on the Great Lakes. Fitzgerald had refused to captain a steamship and so spent his last years in the coal and lumber business. He occupied the house for more than 20years. One of the first brick houses built in Oakville; the building features a fine Regency style porch and French casement windows. Visit the George K.
